India’s Prarthana Thombare and her partner Alevtina Ibragimova bowed out of the doubles draw of the Mumbai Open 2026 WTA 125 after losing their quarter-final at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association on Wednesday.

In singles, top seed Darja Semenistaja of Latvia and second seed Leolia Jeanjean of France progressed to the quarter-finals.

Thombare and Ibragimova faced the second-seeded duo of Polina Iatcenko and Elena Pridankina in the doubles quarter-finals. The pair was unable to make inroads against their opponents, who registered a 6-1, 6-1 win to move into the semi-finals.

Earlier in the day, singles top seed Darja Semenistaja opened proceedings with a hard-fought victory over Japan’s Mai Hontama.

Champion of the 2024 edition, Darja recovered after falling behind in the opening set and later edged a close second-set tie-break to seal a 6-4, 7(7)-6(3) result in one hour and 55 minutes.

Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi produced one of the day’s tightest battles on Court 1, rallying from a set down to outlast Morocco’s Yasmine Kabbaj in a match that stretched to two hours and 40 minutes. The Japanese tennis player held firm in the final tie-break for a 4-6, 6-4, 7(7)-6(5) victory.

Third seed Leolia Jeanjean followed with a composed performance on centre court, easing past Japan’s Miho Kuramochi 6-3, 6-3 to secure her quarter-final berth.

Last season’s runner-up, Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, also advanced, delivering a strong 6-4, 6-1 win over Japan’s Misaki Matsuda.

In the final match of the day, Semenistaja returned to action for her doubles encounter alongside Zuzanna Pawlikowska. The pair were overpowered by Hiroko Kuwata and Park So-hyun, who moved into the next round with a 6-0, 6-4 victory.

The Indian tennis pair of Ankita Raina and Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, along with Rutuja Bhosale and her partner Peangtarn Plipuech of Thailand, will be in action on Thursday.
