Calvin Ramsay closes in on stunning Scottish Premiership return as club set to win race to land Liverpool star revealed

KILMARNOCK are set to win the race for Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay.

The 21-year-old is available on loan after being recalled from a spell with Wigan during the first half of the season.

Premiership strugglers St Johnstone expressed an interest in taking him but Ramsay had no interest in joining a relegation battle.

Killie boss Derek McInnes, who was in charge of Aberdeen when Ramsay was making his way through the Dons’ academy, has now made his move.

And he looks poised to see off interest from several other clubs.

Ramsay is eager to get playing again so will accept the offer of moving to Rugby Park for the second half of the season.

McInnes has been on the hunt for a right-sided defender and in Ramsay will get a player with previous knowledge of the league who is keen to kick-start his career once again.

A product of Aberdeen's youth system, Ramsay progressed through the academy ranks with the Dons.

He made his first team debut as as 17-year old in March 2021 and made a handful of further appearances that season.

Ramsay enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign the following campaign as he established himself as Aberdeen's first choice right-back.

He racked up 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring once from defence.

Ramsay's performances earned him the SFWA Young Player of the Year award.

Plenty of big clubs were alerted by his consistent showings and it was Liverpool who won the race to sign him in June 2022.

He joined the Reds in what was a club-record sale for Aberdeen that could reach up to £6million.

Then-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was said to be a big fan of Ramsay and he gave him his debut in the Champions League in November, just five months after signing.

That sub appearance was swiftly followed by his first start in the EFL Cup against Derby the following week.

Ramsay then earned his first Scotland cup later that month.

However, disaster struck as an injury suffered in February 2023 required surgery and he underwent surgery and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

His Liverpool career has never really recovered.

A season-long loan to Championship outfit Preston for the 2023/24 campaign didn't work out and he was recalled half way through having made just two appearances.

Ramsay then moved on loan to Bolton before heading to Wiga n this summer.

He returned to Liverpool at the beginning of this month and now looks set to seal a return to Scotland after two years away.
