Dan Ashworth’s abrupt departure from Manchester United raised major questions about Ineos and their project at Old Trafford.Ineos have brought up a year in charge of Manchester United and it’s fair to say that the jury is still out.United continue to struggle on the pitch with recruitment still a problem and new boss Ruben Amorim yet to truly convince.Off the pitch, United have just announced more redundancies as Ratcliffe continues to try and cut costs. Those cuts are a little difficult to stomach when you think about some of the needless expenditure incurred under Ineos.Erik ten Hag’s sacking just months after Ineos backed him springs to mind, as does the exit of Dan Ashworth.Photo by OLI SCARFF/AFP via Getty ImagesDan Ashworth set for next step after Manchester United exitIneos came in and wanted the top people in the top jobs at Old Trafford.Ashworth was quickly established as the top target to become United’s new sporting director and Ineos paid compensation to lure him away from Newcastle United. After just one transfer window at the club, Ashworth left United in abrupt fashion, departing after just five months at United. It’s fair to question just how Ineos appointed Ashworth and then decided that he wasn’t the right man after all in such rapid fashion.Ashworth was linked with a move to Everton after leaving United whilst Arsenal were even suggested as Ashworth’s next club as confusion surrounded his United exit.Ashworth has now ladned a new role but United fans may be surprised to hear just where he has ended up.The Times report that Ashworth has agreed to take on an advisory role with Warwickshire County Cricket Club.Ashworth previously joined the Warwickshire cricket audit committee in 2021 but is now taking on a voluntary advisory position.Ashworth’s remit will centre around ‘high performance’ from his experience in high-ranking jobs in football.United fans may be surprised to hear that Ashworth is heading to cricket rather than staying in football, but this is likely to be a temporary post until football clubs make him offers for the summer.Ashworth sacking a major error for IneosIneos need to get things right at United but the Ashworth situation is their biggest disaster so far. This was supposed to be the man to lead United forward off the pitch but he didn’t even make it to the January transfer window.United paid £4.1million for the Ashworth experience, which includes the compensation paid to Newcastle United and the money Ashworth received for leaving. The job cuts don’t look great when that kind of money was so carelessly wasted but we can only hope that Ineos learnt something from Ashworth’s brief spell and don’t repeat the same mistakes in the future.Time will tell whether Amorim is a success or failure but Ineos really can’t afford to have got that one wrong after blunders over both Ashworth and Ten Hag.
