Women’s Tennis Staves Off Spartans for 4-3 Road Victory

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis outlasted San Jose State for a 4-3 road victory on Saturday at the Spartan Tennis Complex.

With the victory, the Aggies have won three matches in a row for the first time since 2022 and the first time doing so in conference play since 2019.

Doubles

The Aggies again took the doubles point with wins at the second and third positions. Sophomore Kylee Sperry and freshman Terezia Mlkva earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles before the Spartans responded with a win at the top spot. With doubles again coming down to court three, sophomore Maria Paula Ramos Garcia and freshman Chahd Tourkhani once again pulled through in the clutch for a 7-6 (4) victory, giving USU the 1-0 advantage.

Singles

Tourkhani continued into singles play, dominating at the fifth position for a 6-0, 6-1 victory. SJSU then recorded wins at courts two, three and four to take a 3-2 lead in the match.

Both matches at No. 1 and No. 6 singles went a full three sets and involved tiebreaks. At the top spot, Mlkva kept the Aggies alive, bouncing back after dropping a first-set tiebreak to record a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3 victory. All eyes then turned to the sixth position where Junior Magdalena Nunez Pureco also came back after losing a first-set tiebreak, outlasting her opponent to post a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 win and secure USU's third-straight victory.
