The US Open set to make change this year which will leave Wimbledon standing alone

The US Open has now left Wimbledon standing alone after making a schedule change.

The New York-based Grand Slam is the fourth and final major of the tennis calendar which is host to Arthur Ashe Stadium, the biggest tennis stadium in the world.

The tournament is known for having some of the most raucous and animated crowds in the game, which have witnessed some iconic matches over the years.

The US Open usually commences on the final Monday in August, but that is now about to change.

What change has the US Open made that leaves Wimbledon on its own?

The US Open is set to follow in the footsteps of the Australian Open and French Open.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) confirmed via the US Open’s website that the tournament will now commence on Sunday from the 2025 event onwards.

This will be the first weekend start to the US Open in the Open Era, and it will run from August 24 to September 7.

The first round of the men’s and women’s tournaments will take place from Sunday to Tuesday, leaving space for an extra 70,000 fans to watch the action at Flushing Meadows.

In making the change, the US Open said the change will allow “more fan access than ever to the main draw following three consecutive years of record-breaking attendance”.

This means that the Wimbledon Championships is now the only remaining Grand Slam that will still commence on a Monday.

Who are the reigning US Open and Wimbledon champions?

In 2025 the US Open will begin for the first time on a Sunday.

Therefore, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka’s title defences in New York will commence a day earlier.

The pair won their respective titles in straight sets to lift the trophy for the first time at Flushing Meadows.

Wimbledon will continue to commence on Monday where Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejčíková are the reigning champions.

The Spaniard defended his title by recording a comprehensive victory over Novak Djokovic, while Krejčíková overcame Jasmine Paolini in three sets to become Wimbledon champion for the first time.
