Erling Haaland on Szoboszlai's red card

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Haaland showed sympathy for his former Red Bull Salzburg teammate, insisting that the goal should have stood, and Szoboszlai should have been spared the red card as a result.

"For me, of course the referee has to follow the rules, but this will give him three games, and in the end I feel bad for him," Haaland said. "He gets three games, just give the goal, don't give red card, simple as that.

"But it's the rules, and it's just how it is. I don't know, in the end, Cherki just passed me the ball so I could score, but that's just how it is."

Slot's new message to his players

Paul Robinson speaking on BBC 5live at Anfield: "This is better from Liverpool. They have started this second half sharply and you can see the message from the manager; to get the ball forward quicker with more purpose rather than recycling the possession."

Goalless at the break, but there are simply too many gaps in the Liverpool midfield here, with Manchester City playing well and getting into dangerous areas.

Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are being overrun and the Reds, as a collective, just aren't keeping the ball well enough.

Daniel Sturridge compares Florian Wirtz to Phillippe Coutinho

"Wirtz's game is developing. The numbers he's now putting on the board, he's doing very well" said Sturridge on Sky Sports

"I like the areas he picks up, in those pockets, on the half-turn.

"The creative influence - that's something that's been missing over the previous seven or eight years. Philippe Coutinho was doing things and being a creative influence. Wirtz is the creative influence at Liverpool Football Club.

"Today is one of those days where he can be decisive. I think we've seen the worst of Wirtz - and today's the day to showcase his ability."

Daniel Sturridge on Virgil van Dijk's comments

Daniel Sturridge has agreed with Virgil van Dijk that former players turned pundits have a "duty of care" to the next generation.

He said: "There’s a difference between criticism, constructive criticism and disrespect and it depends on the level at which we believe as the people on the other side.

"What we believe to be disrespectful and how the player takes it is down to them. For me, I try to operate in a way of saying like how would I feel in this situation or in the moment because we’ve all been there

“We have a duty to the next generation, not just the current players but the players after them as well, and how we go about that, everybody’s different.”

What Slot said about City

Here's what Arne Slot had to say about Manchester City during a press conference on Thursday...

"We were completely outplayed when we played them in the first half earlier in the season – for large parts, not the complete 45 minutes.

"It's another moment to see where we are with the development of this team. That being said, we know the importance of the result on Sunday, but that goes for all the 20 teams that are playing in the Premier League this weekend.

"It's the end phase of the season, so results matter more and more."
