Alexander Isak could have a Newcastle United reunion sooner than expected

Alexander Isak left Newcastle United this summer, but that does not mean that Newcastle United fully left him.

The struggling Liverpool forward still plays international football with multiple members of Eddie Howe’s squad, with Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth both part of the Sweden setup.

They are all set for change, with Graham Potter becoming the new Sweden manager. He has been appointed on an interim basis, tasked with guiding Sweden into the 2026 World Cup.

It will be quite the challenge for Potter, who is looking to potentially lean on a Newcastle United coach for help.

Graham Potter wants Graeme Jones to Sweden coaching team

The former West Ham manager is assembling his coaching staff ahead of the upcoming international break, and one person who is under consideration is Newcastle United assistant coach Graeme Jones.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report that Potter is considering an approach to add Jones to his backroom staff.

They claim that that the new Sweden boss is a ‘long-term admirer’ of Jones, who has been with the Magpies since January 2021.

He first arrived as part of Steve Bruce’s coaching setup, brought in to give a side that was struggling a tactical boost.

Jones was then kept on following Bruce’s departure, acting as caretaker manager during PIF’s search for a replacement.

The Gateshead-born tactician remained with the club following Eddie Howe’s appointment, and has been part of the Newcastle United coaching staff ever since.

Newcastle United coach has international experience

Whether or not Jones is interested in working alongside Potter is unclear. And if he is, it is also unclear how that would effect his role at St James’ Park.

Working as a coach for Sweden would only be a part-time commitment, as Potter only has a contract until March 2026. His long-term future depends on whether or not he can guide the likes of Elanga and Isak to next summer’s World Cup.

Juggling Newcastle United duties and international commitments is not something that Jones is a stranger to, having done the same when he was part of Gareth Southgate’s England setup for Euro 2020 (held in 2021).

Jones has also experienced international football with Belgium, having worked under Roberto Martinez for two years.
