IPL trade: Ishan Kishan returning home to Mumbai Indians? Lot of interest for wicketkeeper-batter

Ishan Kishan is attracting interest from multiple IPL franchises ahead of the mini-auction, with Mumbai Indians leading the chase to bring the wicketkeeper-batter back. Despite a mixed spell at SRH, Kishan’s strong Ranji form and past success with MI make him a valuable top-order option. Talks hinge on SRH’s willingness and Kishan’s own decision to move.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction is still some time away but a lot is happening behind the scenes where franchises are exploring their potential trade options before the players go under the hammer. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is attracting a lot of interest from franchises and five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are learnt to be leading the race to bring the destructive southpaw home. It is understood that there has been an approach from MI for Kishan but nothing has materialised at this stage.

Not just MI, even Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have knocked SRH's door for a potential trade/all-cash deal for the left-hander but there hasn't been any further development on that front. All three parties - MI, KKR and RR - seem to be on the lookout for a top-order wicketkeeper-batter considering their current squad dynamics.

South Africa's Ryan Rickelton did a very good job at top of the order for MI in IPL 2025 but Kishan gives them more flexibility and allows the management to explore another overseas option in the Playing XI. Additionally, it also allows them to be ready for life after Rohit Sharma . The former India and MI skipper is 38 right now and clearly doesn't have a lot of IPL years left in him too. MI have always had an eye on the future and Kishan is someone, they have invested immensely in the past and at present he fits the bill for the Mumbai-based franchise. However, everything depends on how the communication materialises between MI and SRH. From the initial chatter, SRH seem to be reluctant on letting go off Kishan but all this could change if the player decides to leave.

Kishan had his best years in the IPL at MI and he couldn't live up to his billing at SRH after fetching Rs 11.25 crore at the mega-auction. It has been a topsy-turvy ride for out of favour southpaw since then but the stars are aligning again for him. Kishan nearly returned to the India Test squad during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy but couldn't join the side due to an injury. His unavailability meant N Jagadeesan joined the side as a replacement for Rishabh Pant . The left-hander had a solid start to the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season as he smashed 173 vs Tamil Nadu and played a pivotal role in Jharkhand's thumping an innings and 114-run triumph. Even though Kishan wasn't named in the recent India A squad, he is still on selectors' radar and is being tracked.
