Nottingham Forest appoint Ange Postecoglou as new manager - hours after sacking Nuno Espirito Santo

Nottingham Forest have appointed former Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou as their new manager.

It comes hours after the Premier League club sacked Nuno Espirito Santo just three games into the new season.

Postecoglou, 60, was sacked by Spurs after winning the Europa League in May, ending the north London side's 17-year wait for a trophy.

In a statement, Forest's owner, Evangelos Marinakis, said: "We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies.

"His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.

"After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies.

"Ange has the credentials and the track-record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey."

Santo, 51, left his role late on Monday.

His last game was a 3-0 loss to a West Ham side who went into the game off the back of two heavy defeats in their opening two games.

The Portuguese manager surpassed all expectations with a 7th-place finish in last season's campaign.

However, his relationship with Forest's owner became strained towards the end of his tenure.

Santo had criticised the club's transfer activity in the summer, and openly said the relationship had suffered.

He said at the time: "I always had a very good relationship with the owner, last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis. This season it is not so well.

"Our relationship has changed, and we are not as close. Everybody at the club should be together, but this is not the reality."

It also came after Forest's owner appeared to confront Santo on the pitch following a 2-2 draw at home to Leicester City last season.

Forest later denied it was a confrontation and said the owner was simply frustrated that striker Taiwo Awoniyi had continued to play following an injury.

Postecoglou's first game in charge will be away to Arsenal on Saturday, 13 September.
