Man United accelerate striker signing after Joshua Zirkzee latest – Insider

Man United are planning to sign a new striker after Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles under Ruben Amorim, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that Amorim wants to bring in a striker who more suits his style.

However, he explained that any deal would depend on the club’s financial situation and a big-money move is unlikely to take place in January.

Zirkzee, 23, has been a source of frustration for United this season after a number of inconsistent performances, and was booed off by the crowd against Newcastle.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Hojlund has struggled to impress, as Brown explained he must improve his hold-up play if he wants to become more of a key player in Amorim’s side.

Between them, the two strikers have scored just 5 goals in 35 Premier League appearances and United are desperate for a more consistent source of goals to lead the line.

Brown previously told Football Insider that United are prioritising a move to sign a new striker after Amorim assessed his squad shortly after his arrival.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also spent time as the chief scout at Blackburn and Sunderland, insisted that the recruitment team at Old Trafford have already begun assessing their options.

“I’m told they’ve already been looking to sign a new striker,” he told Football Insider.

“But whether they can afford to or not, I don’t know. They’ve spent over £100million on the two they’ve got starting at the moment.

“I think it’s unlikely they’ll make any big-money signings this month.

“Zirkzee hasn’t been tearing up any trees, he hasn’t shown anything to prove he should be starting.

“I have to say about Hojlund too, this word promising keeps coming into it, but watching him now, he’s always trying to wrestle centre-halves.

“He doesn’t focus on the ball, then he’s losing out and turning over possession. He’s got to learn to hold the ball up if he wants to be the first-choice striker.

“So United and Amorim are short of a proper centre-forward who can hold the ball up and bring his teammates into play.

“If you keep making 30 yard runs to support your striker and he keeps losing the ball, it’s a problem.“
