Santiago Gimenez has opened up about his conversations with Liverpool manager Arne Slot regarding a potential switch to Nottingham Forest, which he ultimately declined.

Slot, who brought Gimenez to Feyenoord in July 2022, saw the Mexican striker flourish in the Eredivisie before moving to Anfield last summer.

Despite an opportunity to join the Premier League at the start of the season, Gimenez chose to stay put after discussions with the club. It was rumored that he was hesitant to join a team fighting relegation—a concern that seems unfounded now, with Nuno Espirito Santo's squad impressively sitting third in the league standings, trailing only behind Slot's Liverpool and Arsenal.

Feyenoord's director of football, Dennis te Kloese, hinted that Gimenez didn't feel entirely convinced about moving to Forest. In a recent chat with ESPN, Gimenez confirmed he sought advice from Slot: "I spoke to him a couple of times when I got that offer.

"I asked him for his advice, and he gave it to me. The content of the conversation remains between us, but that was the last time we spoke."

Gimenez also discussed a potential reunion with Slot, having enjoyed a fine campaign with Feyenoord this term. The Mexican striker has scored 10 goals in 14 appearances so far. He added: "Football is always about meeting the same familiar faces again and that is the beauty of this world.

"You leave an impression, make friends all over the world, and later you see each other again, greet each other and meet again."

Liverpool was linked with a move for the striker and there is a feeling that a move for a new No.9 may be on the cards at the end of the season. Doubts remain over Darwin Nunez, while Diogo Jota continues to struggle with injury.

Slot has been playing Luis Diaz in a central position in recent weeks, with Cody Gakpo often used out wide on the left.
