A football pitch in South Lanarkshire has been wrecked after vandals drove a car over it before setting off fireworks.

Images shared on social media by South Lanarkshire Council show heavy tyre tracks over the grass at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground by the site's training equipment.

The seven-a-side pitch will not be in use for an indefinite period as a result.

The local authority has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

A council spokesperson said: "One of the seven-a-side pitches at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground was badly damaged on Friday night.

"It was caused by a vehicle driving onto the pitch to launch fireworks.

"This is a well-used football pitch that will be out of action indefinitely due to this act of vandalism."

Police Scotland said inquiries were ongoing into the incident.
