Chris Sutton raises major seven-word Man Utd question that will come back to haunt Ruben Amorim after Europa League final

Chris Sutton has dropped a clear-cut assessment on Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim after the Red Devils lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Manchester United reached the 2025 Europa League final under Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim and met Tottenham in an all-English showdown in Spain.

Tottenham inflicted a 1-0 win over United at the San Mames Stadium on Wednesday evening and Spurs walked away with the Europa League trophy on the night.

Brennan Johnson put Tottenham into the lead against United in the first half and the Red Devils were unable to climb back into the Europa League final after the break.

Tottenham have now punched their ticket to the Champions League for next season and United will be without any European football for the 2025-26 campaign.

Amorim, who left Sporting CP in 2024 and arrived at Old Trafford last November, will end the current campaign without any major silverware as United manager.

The 40-year-old former Sporting CP boss has faced a mammoth task in leading United’s turbulent season after he replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.

Chris Sutton’s ruthless eye-opening verdict on Ruben Amorim and Man Utd after the 2025 Europa League final defeat

Manchester United now only have one match remaining in their lacklustre 2024-25 campaign at Old Trafford under Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils will leave Bilbao without the Europa League trophy and will head back to England for their final Premier League clash of the season on the weekend.

United will face Premier League side Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils’ last match of the current campaign being scheduled for a 4pm UK kick-off time.

Chris Sutton has said that a key question from United’s defeat to Spurs in the Europa League final will be whether or not Amorim was too late with his substitutions.

“For Man Utd, I thought they were flat all evening,” Sutton explained on BBC Radio 5 Live, as per BBC Sport.

“Was Ruben Amorim late making his substitutions? It’s been a disappointing season since Amorim took over.”

Rio Ferdinand dropped his instant verdict on Man Utd’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final

Rio Ferdinand was on punditry for TNT Sports and former United defender insisted that Amorim will need “more time” for his long-term project at Old Trafford.

Speaking at the San Mames Stadium after Spurs’ win, he said on TNT Sports: “Ruben Amorim’s way of playing compared to the past regime is very different.

“In terms of what he wants them to do – I think he needs more time; he hasn’t had a pre-season.

“He needs a recruitment window to then have real judgement.”

United languish in 16th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are only a point clear of Europa League winners Tottenham with one match remaining.
