Texas A&M blows out Mizzou football in Columbia

2
The dream is done.

Missouri football, playing without its top two quarterbacks because of injury and needing a miracle to keep its grandest ambitions alive, sputtered and stumbled on its home field Saturday, losing 38-17 to Texas A&M on Faurot Field in Columbia.

The Tigers hung around for about half of the game, but the dam broke in the waning moments of a scrappy but mostly competitive first half.

With one minute left in the half, the Tigers faced third-and-10. True freshman QB Matt Zollers, playing in place of injured Beau Pribula, gave up a strip sack to Aggies linebacker Daymion Sanford, and the ball popped up into the arms of safety Dalton Brooks.

The defensive back returned the turnover inside the 5-yard line, and two plays later Texas A&M running back EJ Smith was in the end zone.

That meant an already sputtering Missouri offense needed to conjure up a two-score turnaround. The Tigers needed inspiration, which had been lacking all half long, and they needed it quick.

It didn’t come.

On the other end of halftime, Mizzou (6-3, 2-3 SEC) went three-and-out and opted to punt on fourth-and-inches. Four plays later, KC Concepcion took a 48-yard screen pass to the end zone and made it a three-score game.

The mountain to climb became an unscalable cliffside.

Jamal Roberts and Ahmad Hardy each eclipsed 100 rushing yards in the loss and both scored second-half touchdowns.

But the signs of life were all too rare, and the Aggies had answers.

Texas A&M (9-0, 6-0) ran a successful third-quarter fake punt to Brooks after MU had pulled within two scores, and the result was an instant red zone possession and ultimately a field goal.

The Aggies added a 54-yard chunk touchdown run from Rueben Owens before the game was up. Texas A&M rubbed salt in the wound with some garbage-time points.

An underwhelming night — and season — fizzled to the finish.

Missouri’s defense had an excellent first half, but the game got away from Missouri as the offense stalled out time and time again at midfield.

Zollers was 7-of-22 passing for 77 yards in his first start. Mizzou rushed for 200 yards, with Hardy and Roberts each tallying more than 100 yards on the ground.

Reed, who has emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate for the undefeated Aggies, was 20-of-29 for 221 yards and two touchdowns.

Mizzou’s path to the College Football Playoff is now officially closed.

The Tigers will play their final home game of the 2025 season on Saturday, Nov. 15, against Mississippi State.

Injuries made a meaningful December matchup a tall order, and beating the Aggies was always going to be an uphill battle.

Missouri has lost three of its past four games as its season has come undone against ranked teams. The loss to the Aggies marked the first time Mizzou has lost back-to-back games since 2022.

Missouri football vs Texas A&M live score updates

This section was updated during the game.

Fourth-quarter updates

5:54 p.m.: Touchdown Texas A&M. Rueben Owens gets his second of the night.

5:41 p.m.: This one-time slugfest has opened up in the fourth quarter. Touchdown Mizzou, as Ahmad Hardy takes it 45 yards and it's a two-score game with 6:45 to play. 31-17 to the Aggies.

5:33 p.m.: Touchdown Texas A&M, as running back Rueben Owens takes it 57 yards to the house. 31-10 Aggies, and that really is that.

5:25 p.m.: Instead of going for fourth-and-12, Mizzou brings out Oliver Robbins for a 49-yard field goal try. The try is good, so it's a two-score game again. The turnover has helped the cause.

Aggies 24, Mizzou 10

5:18 p.m.: Mizzou safety Mose Phillips III forces a fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Mizzou recovers. Marvin Burks Jr. fell on the loose ball.

End of 3Q: A&M 24, Mizzou 7

5:05 p.m.: Texas A&M gets 3 points on the back of the successful fake punt. It's a good job from the defense to hold the Aggies to a field goal, but it's a three-score game again and the wind really feels like it came out of MU's sails. 24-7.

5:02 p.m.: It looked for all the world like Missouri was going to get the ball back with a chance to make it a one-score game again. Texas A&M fakes the punt and hauls it about 50 yards into the red zone. That's brutal.

4:53 p.m.: Touchdown Mizzou.

Tigers take advantage of DaMarion Fowlkes' excellent kickoff return, and Jamal Roberts punches in a 4-yard score to get MU on the board. It will be reviewed, but all indications suggest this is back to a two-score game.

There is a sign of life.

4:42 p.m.: That's all she wrote.

Touchdown Texas A&M. Santana Banner misses a tackle on third-and-long as the Aggies show some strong blocking, and wideout KC Concepcion takes a 48-yard TD reception home. Ball game.

Texas A&M 21, Mizzou 0 — 3Q 11:21

4:37 p.m.: Missouri's second half is off to a sluggish start. The Tigers received the ball from the opening kickoff, but a penalty backed them up inside their own 10. Mizzou got to fourth-and-very short, but the punt team rolls out and some boos ring around the stadium.

Half: Texas A&M 14, Missouri 0

4:11 p.m.: Touchdown Texas A&M

EJ Smith punches it in with 20 seconds to play in the half, and the Aggies get 7 from the strip sack.

14-0 Aggies and a mountain to climb for Mizzou.

4:07 p.m.: That's the last thing Mizzou could afford to do there. Zollers is strip-sacked and it's returned inside the Mizzou 5.

Dreadful last few plays from an execution standpoint, and Texas A&M will take over with goal to go.

3:58 p.m.: Big play from Darris Smith, who gets his second sack of the season and forces A&M into another punt. Less than two minutes to go here in the first half.

3:51 p.m.: Missouri turns it over on downs inside the A&M half. Aided by a few penalties, Mizzou got down to the 35 but couldn't complete the fourth-and-5 pass to Olugbode.

The Tigers had tried a 50-yard field goal with kicker Oliver Robbins, who has not taken an FG attempt for MU before, but his try was well short. Texas A&M had jumped offside and Mizzou was able to go for it on fourth-and-5. Empty, but better from MU.

3:43 p.m.: Jamal Roberts has given the Mizzou offense a real jolt. Three runs, 29 yards and the Tigers are approaching midfield again.

We just got word that the broadcast is reporting Matt Zollers is dealing with some hand issues. We're not entirely sure what that means, but he's still in the game. Would have to guess that happened on the strip sack.

3:37 p.m.: Marcel Reed completely missed on a third down throw, but that'll go down as an important stand for the Mizzou defense. Can't let the Aggies get two scores up today, so they needed to force that punt.

3:30 p.m.: Missouri made mistake after mistake after the Olugbode catch. Hardy was called for a false start. Blockers failed to pick up pressure on Manning after a catch. Zollers was sacked and Mizzou ended up in third-and-forever. Tigers punt again.

End of 1Q: A&M 7, Mizzou 0

3:23 p.m.: Donovan Olugbode just made one of the most impressive contested catches we've seen all season. Zollers throws a pretty ball and that was a nice throw, but good grief, what a catch from the rookie receiver.

3:17 p.m.: Touchdown Texas A&M. After picking up a fresh set of downs from the two, the visitors punch it in with a third-down pass to Ashton Betthel-Roman. Aggies lead 7-0.

3:14 p.m.: KC Concepcion uses a screen to pick up 23 yards from the flat. Aggies are in the red zone.

3:09 p.m.: Mizzou lets Matt Zollers air it out, but his third-down throw was just out of reach for wideout Josh Manning along the right sideline. There was a soft case for PI there, but I'm not sure. Tigers punting away for the second straight series.

3:03 p.m.: Great stuff from Josiah Trotter on third down. Challenged KC Concepcion's space and helped force an incompletion. Texas A&M is punting for the second straight drive, and Mizzou will take over at its own 23.

2:54 p.m.: Missouri's first play on offense with Matt Zollers at QB was a 40-yard chunk run for Ahmad Hardy that reached midfield. But, the Tigers stall out three plays after that and punt to the A&M 10.

2:52 p.m.: Good first series for the Mizzou defense. Tigers get Marcel Reed and Co. to stall out at midfield and the Aggies will punt away. Matt Zollers first snap as the starting QB will come from his own 9-yard line.

2:49 p.m.: After getting into third-and-medium and seemingly forcing Marcel Reed into an off-target throw, corner Stephen Hall is called for PI and the Aggies get a free first down, moving into MU territory.

Gametime in CoMo

Texas A&M has won the toss and elected to receive. We are about to be underway in Columbia. Mizzou defense likely to be up first.

Trip to the field

We just returned from our trip down to Faurot Field to get a head count and take in some of the pregame atmosphere. Matt Zollers, you'll be pleased to hear, has arrived and is in full pads.

There's a strong alumni list of attendees, with recent former Tigers Johnny Walker Jr., Luke Bauer, Drake Heismeyer and Barrett Banister among the players we spotted on the sideline. Henry Josey — who we recall having a pretty major moment against these Aggies 12 years ago — also is here and will be on Big Mo duties.

Final availability report publishes — no change

There were no changes on the final SEC-mandated pregame availability report for either Mizzou or Texas A&M. That means Missouri will be without Brett Norfleet, Beau Pribula, Sam Horn and Blake Craig. The Aggies are missing starters in running back Le'Veon Moss, linebacker Scooby Williams and safety Bryce Anderson.

Missouri football vs Texas A&M: Pregame updates

Hello, for the penultimate time this season, from Faurot Field in Columbia. There's a huge game in Columbia. Will we see the birth of a program quarterback, or is the Tigers' CFP dream about to come to an end?

We'll find all of that out over the course of this fall-feeling Saturday.

For now, some pregame stuff: The north end zone project is really beginning to take shape, with some significant progress since we were last in this stadium Oct. 11. The area where the new Rock M and hill is beginning to take shape. It looks like some of the interior may also be beginning to take shape. Picture:

Missouri also has arrived, going through Tiger Walk.

Mizzou's players have switched out the "Believe In U.S." pregame shirts for the classic "Something to Prove" motto. You gotta play the hits.

Missouri-Texas A&M series history

Series record: Texas A&M leads 11-7

Last MU win: Missouri 34, Vanderbilt 27 (Nov. 15, 2014, in College Station, Texas)

Last A&M win: Texas A&M 41, Missouri 10 (Oct. 5, 2024, in College Station, Texas)

Eli Drinkwitz is 0-2 against the Aggies as Mizzou’s head coach, including a lackluster loss last season at Kyle Field.

The last time Mizzou beat Texas A&M on Faurot Field was one we’re pretty confident Mizzou fans remember: Johnny Football; SEC title-game berth on the line; Henry Josey.

Josey broke free for a late, 57-yard touchdown run to defeat Johnny Manziel and the Aggies 28-21, and Mizzou clinched the SEC East crown in its second year in the conference in 2013.

Mizzou vs Texas A&M score prediction

If Missouri pulls out an upset here, it will make for a remarkable story. Facing a defense this complex, this aggressive, this good at getting teams off the field on third down? All while running a true freshman quarterback? The odds do not favor MU.

Missouri’s defense — especially its front — is more than good enough to keep this competitive. Zollers is more than talented enough to lead Mizzou on scoring drives.

But is it all sustainable for four full quarters? Because Texas A&M won’t let up.

We’d love to pick an upset, but that’s not rooted in the reality of the challenge that the Tigers are up against: Texas A&M 28, Missouri 17
