Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers makes Rangers sack claim

A defeat against Celtic this week could very well prove to be the end of Philippe Clement's run as Rangers boss. We have seen plenty of managers in better positions be shown the Ibrox exit door. The name of Giovanni van Bronckhorst comes to mind, who had guided the club to the Europa League final months before he was sacked.

Or perhaps the Rangers will decide to stick with Clement, no matter what happens in the next Glasgow Derby. After all, they handed him a long-term contract extension earlier this season.

Clement has not won a single Glasgow Derby yet. The closest he has gotten was in the last one when he saw his side lose the Scottish League Cup final to Celtic on penalties after a 3-3 draw at Hampden Park.

Of course, Brendan Rodgers knows the importance of the derby when it comes to life as a manager in Glasgow. As reported by The Scotsman, the Celtic boss said:

"It is where you are judged at this level, working at Celtic or Rangers - I think you are judged in these games.

"I saw Giovanni van Bronckhorst get to a European final and then lose his job not long after because he was losing to Celtic. That is a huge measure here of any manager and I'm fully aware of that, I always have been. Winning is very, very important. Winning against your greatest rivals is very important and the progress of your club is important."

Rodgers is one of the best managers in the history of Scottish football. He has won ten trophies as Celtic manager, and failed just once when it comes to domestic competition.

We have seen some genuine progress in Europe this season as well. There is a genuine chance that Celtic could make it to the next phase of the UEFA Champions League.

On the other hand, Clement has a lot of worries at the moment. As things stand, the Rangers are 14 points behind Celtic in the league. After this Ibrox contest, that gap could stand at 17 and at best, would be 11. As a result, the Belgian's exit feels inevitable. When will it happen? Time shall tell. For now, the focus has to be on the next between the two Glasgow giants.
