Barcelona set for unexpected windfall thanks to Espanyol’s interest in former youth star

Barcelona are closely monitoring a developing transfer situation that could benefit the club financially.

According to information shared by journalist Matteo Moretto via MARCA, Espanyol are currently in negotiations to sign former Barcelona academy forward Angel Alarcon.

While the potential move directly concerns Espanyol and Porto, it also has important implications for Barcelona.

This is because when Alarcon left Barça to join Porto, the Catalan club secured a 50% sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

As a result, any future transfer, whether permanent or otherwise, would generate direct income for Barcelona.

Espanyol are in talks

Moretto reports that talks between the parties are ongoing and that no final decision has been made yet, as one of the key points still to be clarified is the structure of the operation.

Espanyol are believed to be weighing up whether to pursue a loan deal or push for a permanent transfer, a distinction that could significantly affect Barcelona’s financial return.

Alarcon, despite his reputation in the youth team, has split his time between Porto’s first team and their reserve side, gaining experience while continuing his development in Portuguese football.

Although he has yet to fully establish himself as a regular starter, his technical ability and attacking instincts remain highly rated.

La Masia roots

Notably, Alarcon is a product of La Masia, where he was considered one of the standout talents of his generation.

His progress was closely followed during his time in the academy, and he even achieved the milestone of making his first-team debut under former manager Xavi Hernandez.

Although his path has taken him away from the Camp Nou, Barcelona’s sell-on clause ensures the club remains linked to his career progression.
