Darren Fletcher is set to hand over the reigns at Manchester United to an interim boss and admits they will have to undo the style embedded by Ruben Amorim, which has little room for tweaking

Manchester United's caretaker boss Darren Fletcher admits the man who replaces him will have to undo a way of playing that's "difficult to adapt from" as the team move on from Ruben Amorim's style.

The Portuguese head coach was sacked this time last week after 14 months in charge. One of the hallmarks of his tenure was his 3-4-3 philosophy which he refused to veer from, even if it didn't bring about the desired results.

Amorim was a devout defender of his system, often suggesting that was not the reason for his team's poor form. He persevered with three at the back at the wing-backs, meaning United's players have had that drilled into them for more than a year now.

That has not been a traditional gameplan for the club and Fletcher concedes the next man through the door, tipped to be either Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick, will have to spend time undoing the lessons learnt under Amorim.

The caretaker said on the challenges ahead": “Confidence and potentially being used to playing a certain style and formation - that’s difficult to adapt from. But as I said, they’ve just got to come together. The biggest thing for me is that the group, the players, whoever leads them comes together.

"It’s only them in the situation, it’s only them that can do something about it, build the confidence through grinding out maybe some results. You want to play nice football but you’ve got to find a way to win first and, once you do that, hard work, attitude, application. It might not be pretty at times but from there you can grow and build and then fast, exciting football can come.”

In the two games since Amorim's axing United have drawn with Burnley and been dumped out of the FA Cup by Brighton - underlining the issues that will face the next man at the helm. The club will appoint an interim for the remainder of the season before landing a permanent boss in the summer.

The Red Devils remain in the hunt for the Champions League spots, even if their hopes of winning any silverware have ended before the middle point of January.

Fletcher attempted to talk up the possibilities that still exit this term. The Scot said: "They are experienced players, they are talented players and, as I said, I challenge them to regroup and it’s over to them. Someone is going to come in and lead them and they need to make sure that they’ve got a lot to play for this season. This team’s still good enough to achieve success this season but they’ve got to dig deep and find a way within themselves.”
