Women's Tennis Fights Hard but Fall in Sesson Opener vs. #22 Washington

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team fought hard, but fell short in its season opener to 22nd-ranked Washington on Wednesday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The match was highlighted by a pair of Rainbow Wahine singles wins by Allaire Berl and Hannah Galindo.

Hawai'i kept things close in doubles. After UH's No. 1 pair of Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor fell to 67th-ranked Erika Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit, 6-3, the 'Bows battled to even things as UH's No. 3 duo of Emma Forgac and Berl held off UW's Alexia Jacobs and Jermine Sherif by a break, 6-4. The doubles point hinged on the results of the No. 2 match between UH's Makeilah Nepomuceno/Hanna Galindo and UW's Reece Carter/Marie Weissheim. The match was tied at 5-5, but the Huskies' Carter and Weissheim pulled away to win the final two games to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.

In singles, UH's two wins came on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. At No. 5, Hawai'i's Berl ralllied her way back after dropping the first set by a break to even her match at a set apiece after taking the second frame by a break of her own. In the third set, marathon, super-tie-breaker, Berl held off UW's Carina Syrtveit in extra time, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).

On the No. 6 court, Hawai'i's Galindo took down the Huskies' Waverly Potter in straight sets,. The first set was tight, but Galindo cruised in the second set to win, 7-5, 6-0.

The Rainbow Wahine are back in action with back-to-back matches against Sacramento State on Thursday, Jan. 22 and Friday, Jan. 23 at the UH Tennis Complex.
