In the midst of a shocking run of form across October and November, it had felt almost an inevitability that the Dutchman would lose his job with the Reds.

Fast forward to January, and things are better, on paper at least. In reality – and on the pitch – the truth is that Liverpool are still far from where they should be given the investment made during the summer.

As a result, some supporters are still of the belief that Slot is no longer the right man to lead Liverpool. Whatever happens for the rest of the season, they want to see a change made in 2026.

One reason that may not happen is because of an alarming lack of candidates to replace the 47-year-old at Anfield. As Chelsea and Manchester United are proving, the options to manage a top club right now are very, very thin on the ground. There is one man who would be a universally popular appointment, though: Luis Enrique.

Having won the treble with PSG last season, Enrique is arguably the best manager in world football at the moment. And after rumours that he may be ready to step away from PSG, Liverpool supporters have been getting ideas.

The Spaniard’s current contract ends in 2027, making his future slightly unclear. But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, suggestions that Enrique could soon leave PSG are wide of the mark.

“I wanted to clarify something. The stories from the international press coming about Luis Enrique rejecting a new contract at Paris Saint Germain, from what I heard, are not true. PSG are in a very good relationship with Luis Enrique, he is involved in everything,” the journalist told his YouTube channel on Sunday.

“PSG are fully focused on their project with Luis Enrique. Today he said in a press conference the press is full of fake news around PSG just to create problems in the environment, but that’s not the reality. Enrique keeps discussing with PSG, the atmosphere is very good between them and at the moment the situation is completely quiet with a full focus on the present.

“Don’t disturb PSG because at this stage these stories are completely fake.”

Should Liverpool step up their pursuit in January?

Liverpool should be keeping tabs on Enrique

Whatever the situation, until Enrique signs a new deal to stay in Paris for the long-term, Liverpool should be keeping tabs on him.

Presenter Richard Keys claimed back in November that Liverpool want Enrique to replace Slot and essentially the only reason the Dutch coach is still in a job is because they can’t currently get him.

But even if the former Barcelona midfielder does agree a new contract with PSG, that would not mean that he is completely unavailable. If Slot’s position becomes untenable, they have to test the water.

In a climate where top coaches seem harder to come by than ever, Enrique is perhaps the one manager – aside from Jurgen Klopp – who Liverpool fans would be completely comfortable with taking over.

Whether this year, next year, or in the years to come, Enrique will leave the Parc des Princes at some stage. It would be a surprise if Liverpool are not in the mix to snap him up when that time arrives.
