Man United agree Matheus Cunha deal as Ruben Amorim moves closer to sealing first summer transfer with Red Devils set to trigger Wolves star's £62.5m release clause

Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Wolves striker Matheus Cunha with the club set to trigger his £62.5million release clause.

A verbal agreement has been made with the forward joining on a five-year deal, with an option for a further year.

United have endured a miserable season, losing in the Europa League final to Tottenham, and won't compete in Europe next season for just the second time in 35 years after finishing in 15th in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim is desperate to bolster his attacking options with Rasmus Hojlund misfiring, while Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford look set leave in the summer.

Cunha, who signed a new four-year deal with Wolves in February, has scored 15 times and provided six assists in the league this season, and has been heavily linked with United throughout the campaign.

In April, Mail Sport reported that the Red Devils were close to agreeing terms with the 25-year-old.

A verbal agreement is now in place while the contracts will be checked next week, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Brazilian has made his desire to leave his current club clear for a number of months.

Amorim has made no secret of his admiration for Cunha. He was spotted in conversation with him after United lost 2-0 at Molineux in December and again in the tunnel in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford last month.

Asked about Cunha last month, Amorim said: 'I will not say anything about Matheus, because if I say one time I will have to say for any situation that is yes or no.

'I will not comment on that. It's hard to predict what is going to happen in the future.'

Meanwhile, United legend Paul Scholes has said that Cunha would be wise to have chosen another destination.

Explaining why he 'worries' for the forward in his TNT Sports column, Scholes wrote: 'He looks like he's got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants.

'He knows that physically, his team are just not strong or quick enough, so Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he's got quality with 15 league goals this season.

'I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it's such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor.'

United are also interested in signing Ipswich striker Liam Delap, although a number of other Premier League sides including Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton are in the race for his signature as well.

Although Wolves' have struggled this season, finishing below United in 16th, Cunha has been their stand out performer.

But the campaign hasn't been free of drama.

Cunha, who moved to Wolves two years ago, was hit by a four-match ban after headbutting and kicking Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.

He was also slapped with a £50,000 fine for the red card during their clash with the Cherries in the FA Cup.

The Brazil international was handed another two-match ban and an £80,000 fine after appearing to elbow and remove the glasses of an Ipswich staff member.

Cunha's fine was dropped from £120,000 after he offered to pay for a new pair of glasses.

United wrapped up their hugely disappointing campaign with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The win saw them leapfrog Wolves to finish in 15th.

Next season will be the first time in 11 years that they will not be involved in any European competition.
