The formal selection process for host cities and venues for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 (T20WC28) has officially commenced, with states, territories, and regions across Australia and New Zealand invited to bid for the global event.

Jointly awarded by the International Cricket Council to Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket, the tournament is set to be the largest cricket event ever staged in the Southern Hemisphere. Up to 10 premier venues will be selected to host the 20-team field, with the final roster of host locations expected to be announced by the end of 2026.

Emphasising the significant commercial and social impact the tournament will bring to successful host cities, CEO of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, Joel Morrison, said: “Cricket World Cups are mega events and they deliver significant social, economic and promotional benefits to host cities,”

“Key to maximising these outcomes and executing a world class event is cricket’s commitment to a partnership approach with governments, venues, commercial and broadcast partners and local communities,” Morrison said.

Scheduled for October and November 2028, the tournament will feature 55 matches, including 40 Group Stage fixtures and 12 Super 8 matches, culminating in two Semi-Finals and a Final.

Alongside automatic qualifiers Australia and New Zealand, heavyweights such as reigning champions India, England, Pakistan, and South Africa have already secured their places following the conclusion of the 2026 event. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Ireland have also qualified via their International Cricket Council T20I rankings as of 9 March 2026, with the remaining eight spots to be determined through regional pathways.

The selection criteria will focus on a partnership-led approach, seeking venues that can provide world-class infrastructure while inspiring a global fan base through an “electrifying” festival of cricket.

By engaging with prospective partners early, the International Cricket Council aims to ensure the tournament delivers long-term promotional value that extends far beyond the boundary rope.

With the 2026 tournament recently concluded, the focus now shifts to the Southern Hemisphere’s ability to host a record-breaking edition of the sport’s fastest format.

Further details regarding the bidding timeline and specific venue requirements will be managed by the local organising committee throughout the remainder of the year.
