Joao Pedro says manager who's been linked with Man Utd is actually ‘very good in details’

Manchester United are being linked with some highly reputable managers ahead of this summer’s permanent appointment.

The hierarchy at Old Trafford have one of their biggest decisions to make since the takeover this summer as all eyes will be on the next head coach appointment.

Michael Carrick has been flawless since returning to the club as an interim head coach. Three wins from three has lifted the Red Devils into fourth and Champions League qualification is now in sight.

Who do you think will be Man Utd manager at the start of the 2026/27 season?

🔮 Let us know who you believe will and should be in charge? Who will Ineos appoint?

But there has still been no indication that Carrick will get the permanent job. In fact, the noise coming from the club is that his spell is strictly temporary and a full-time appointment will follow this summer.

There are as many as 12 managers linked with United, including current Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi.

Roberto De Zerbi coaching is admired by players

When it came to replacing Erik ten Hag as manager, De Zerbi was interviewed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe as one of the top candidates.

However, De Zerbi instead left Brighton to join French club Marseille. While he was initially successful at his new club, De Zerbi is currently at risk of being sacked after falling short in the Champions League.

That may give Ineos some doubts, but it does seem as though players enjoy playing under the Italian.

Speaking on the One on One from Sky Sports podcast, Chelsea star Joao Pedro was full of praise for De Zerbi from their time at Brighton together.

Would you want Roberto de Zerbi to be Manchester United’s next permanent manager?

What reasons for and against stand out to you?

“For me, personally, he’s very good because I like to play with the ball. So I think when De Zerbi called me when I was in Watford, I had a few conversations with some players who work with him, and they just said good things about him. They said he’s a little bit harder, but he’s a very good coach.

“So when I joined Brighton, I enjoyed to play with him. I learned a lot. He’s very good in details.

“He wants to help the player, and he helped me. I’m very grateful to him because the way he bring me love in football again was different.”

Ineos should have concerns over Roberto De Zerbi

De Zerbi has the Premier League experience that Ineos are looking for in their next appointment, but the 46-year-old would still feel like a very underwhelming appointment.

If he continues as he has started, United fans will find it very difficult to wave goodbye to Carrick at the end of the season.

If Ineos choose to remove Carrick and appoint someone else, it needs to be a high-profile appointment that inspires confidence that United can challenge for titles under them.

As a manager, De Zerbi has won no major titles, and he is on the brink of being sacked at Marseille. Carrick has a CV to match that, and yet he has been labelled as inexperienced.
