(AP Photo)With a second global trophy in his possession as India captain, Rohit Sharma recently declared he’s not retiring from ODIs followed by a gentle advise to stop spreading any rumours about him quitting one-day cricket. Rohit was the captain when India won the T20 World Cup last year and then the Champions Trophy last week. There were speculations that Rohit, 37, might call time on his ODI career following the marquee event, but it wasn’t the case with the captain himself confirming he will continue in the format.related storiesSo, is Rohit targeting the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027 then? The seasoned campaigner refused to commit saying he’s not planning that far ahead and is only focusing on his game. However, Australia legend Ricky Ponting feels that Rohit might be eyeing the next ODI world cup to co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.Ponting felt Rohit’s performance while opening for India in the Champions Trophy was good enough to continue and he’s put the retirement speculations to bed.“When you start getting to that point of your career, everyone’s waiting for you to retire. And I don’t know why, when you can still play as well as he’s played (in the Champions Trophy final), I think he was just trying to put those questions to bed once and for all and say, ‘no, I’m still playing well enough. I love playing in this team. I love leading this team’," Ponting told ICC Review.“And I think, the fact that he said that, to me, it means that he must have that goal in mind of playing in the next (50-over) World Cup (in 2027)," he added.top videos View all Swipe Left For Next Video View allAnother compelling reason Ponting feels could be on Rohit’s mind is the fact that after a stunning run till the final of the 2023 World Cup, India failed to win the title despite being the overwhelming favourites under his captaincy.“I think probably the fact that they (India) lost the last one and he was captain, that might be the thing that’s playing on the back of his mind. Just have one more crack at trying to win the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the ODI World Cup. I mean when you see him play like he played in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn’t say that his time is up just yet," Ponting said.First Published: March 12, 2025, 12:33 IST
