Oviedo back in LaLiga

A new opponent in the 2025/26 season confirmed for FC Barcelona as Real Oviedo have joined Levante and Elche in reaching the Primera División. A 3-2 aggregate win over Mirandés in the LaLiga Hypermotion play-off sees the Asturians back in the top flight for the first time since the 2000/01 season.

This season they made it, because Veljko Paunović's side, which includes names such as star man Santi Cazorla and former blaugrana David Costas, came as close as possible to going up last season, only failing in the play-off final against Espanyol, with Joan Garcia as the starting keeper.

Most recent games between the blaugranes and the Asturians

The most recent LaLiga fixtures between Barça and Oviedo have had a bit of everything. Despite ending up going down on the final day of the 2000/01 season, the Asturians defeated Barça 24 years ago, a 0-1 win at the Spotify Camp Nou in the matchday 36 fixture. The other game between the sides that season saw a 2-3 Barça victory at the Carlos Tartiere stadium, with Kluivert (2) and Rivaldo scoring the goals.

Going back one season to 1999/00, both teams won one game each too. The first was played in Barcelona, where Van Gaal's side came out on top in an action-packed game against Luis Aragonés' charges that ended 3-2, Cocu (2) and Kluivert scoring for the blaugranes. The return league fixture saw the Asturians run out resounding 3-0 winners, however.

Now, some 24 years later, a team that were almost a permanent fixture in the Primera División during the 20th century, Oviedo are back at the top table of Spanish football and will be relishing playing for the three points in both games against FC Barcelona, ​​as the LaLiga line up for the coming season is now complete.
