Ruben Amorim confirmed Manchester United drafted two plans for the summer transfer window before they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 1-0 loss to Spurs in Bilbao confirmed United will have no European football for only the second season in the last 35 years and will not be in the Champions League for two successive seasons for the first time since they re-entered the competition in 1993.

United are confident of signing Wolves playmaker Matheus Cunha for £62.5million and are interested in Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who will be available for £30m due to a release clause.

Yet United's pull in the market is bound to be harmed by the absence of European football from their schedule next season and their lowly finish in the Premier League table. United could finish as low as 17th if they lose to Aston Villa and Spurs avoid defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

"We have two plans even for the market," Amorim confirmed, "and we need to understand that is tough for a club like us not to be in the Champions League.

"But we have to use the other side. So if we have more time, we have more time to think during the week and be better in the Premier League, that will be our focus."

United have won six out of 26 Premier League games since Amorim took over on November 11. Tottenham eliminated them from the League Cup in the quarter-finals and Fulham knocked United out of the FA Cup in the fifth round on a penalty shootout to leave their season dependent on the Europa League.

Since the domestic season resumed after the March internationals, United have not won a single league game and they are winless in eight. They have slid down to 16th but Amorim genuinely believes there have been signs of improvement.

"I think I was always really honest with you guys, we didn’t perform perfect today," Amorim added. "We were better than the opponent. In the second half, we tried everything with central defenders, with players wide, crosses, going inside the box.

"I’m really honest with you, there are some days where I said we were really poor, today was not the day, we were not perfect, we have a lot to improve but I'm always honest with you guys."

"We had some bad results, I think we improved in certain areas, we were competitive in more games we didn't score, sometimes in a small detail we lost some games. I remember a lot of games: Nottingham, Wolves, we create more chances against City at our home, we didn’t score and we lost some games.

"It’s a different way of playing, I try to put it on the players the best I can, try to help them, was really hard on the players. But I also understand I’m a young guy but I understand the chances we have in the second half (against Tottenham), if we score one, the game will be different and our press conference should be different.

"I have nothing to show to our fans, I am really honest with that. But again, I will continue to do things the way I know."
