India began its T20 World Cup title defence with a 29-run win over the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Not a straightforward win that many were expecting, but India has done the job to start its title defence with a win. Suryakumar Yadav with a captain’s knock to steer the side to a good total on a sluggish pitch. The opening bowlers then did the damage with the new ball. The US middle order did show signs of recovery but the target was too steep at the end.

Siraj with the final over. Four!! Shubham moves across and feathers a pull through fine leg for four. Full and wide, mistimed towards long on. No run taken. Slower ball outside off, Shubham misses his sweep. Six!! Connects with his shot this time, deposits a back of a length ball into the stands. Wide ball from Siraj. WICKET!! A yorker on middle to finish the innigns. Shubham is pinned in front.

India wins by 29 runs.

Hardik with his final over. van Schalkwyk looks to hook one over the legside, gets an inside edge to fine leg. A yorker to follow, he runs a legbye. Six!! Full toss outside off, lofted over midwicket for six. Scythes in pain after that shot. Mistimed lofted shot falls beyond the cover fielder, a couple taken. Mistimed pull now, falls safe beyond Siraj at short third.

Arshdeep with his final over. Mohsin clubs a short of a length ball to long on for one. An unnecessary throw from Kishan gives Shubham a single after he missed a pull shot on a slower ball. Four!! Mohsin moves across and paddles one through fine leg for four. WICKET!! A mistimed pull from Mohsin, finds deep midwicket.

van Schalkwyk in at 9. Ducks under a pacy bouncer first ball. Single to finish Arshdeep’s spell.

Hardik with his third. India very much in control after the twin wickets. Shubham mistimes a pull shot to long on for one. Mohsin misses his attempt to guide one through third man. Slices a short ball to deep point for one. Short and wide to Shubham, cut to point for one. Four singles from the over.

WICKET! Axar to Sanjay, goes for the big shot over the legside. Gets a top edge on the slog sweep and holes out to Rinku in the deep.

Harmeet in at 7. WICKET!! Brings out the slog sweep first ball and singles out the deep midwicket fielder.

Axar on a hat-trick. Mohsin, the new batter. Gets a single to short fine leg on his first ball. Shubham picks a single to third man but continues to struggle with the running.

Varun to Sanjay. Looks to pull a length ball towards square leg. Falls short of the fielder in the deep. Shubham with a slog across the line. Umpire gives him out lbw. Shubham reviews. A small spike on UltraEdge, he will survive. Drives a full ball to long off for one. Sanjay picks a single with a push to cover. Six!! Shubham rings out the slog sweep again, and manages to clear long on.

Axar with his third over. Six!! Sanjay goes back and pulls a short ball over midwicket for six. Shubham is too early into his attempted push, manages to get a single to the legside. Sanjay looks for another big hit, falls short of deep midwicket. 11 from the over.

Hardik with his second. Four!! Shubham whips a full ball on the stumps through midwicket and finds the fence. Pull shot, towards the deep midwicket fielder for one. Sanjay plays a cut shot to deep point to pick up one.

Varun with his third. Four!! Sanjay finds the gap through third man with a cut shot. Sanjay pushes a full ball to deep cover for a couple. One run to point for Sanjay. WICKET!! Ishan Kishan fumbles an attempted stumping. Milind begins to run down the crease thinking the ball has gone behind and finds himself short of the crease.

Shubham Ranjane in at 6.

Hardik into the attack. Four!! Back of a length outside off, Milind gets an outside edge that runs away through third man. Appeals for lbw but looked a touch high. India burns a review. Hardik goes short, Milind mistimes it down the ground but it falls ahead of the fielder. Back of a length, lofted over long on for six.

Axar. Milind breaks the shackles with a slog way over the long on region for a six. Much needed hit that. First boundary after 23 balls. Eight runs from the over.

Varun continues. Dot ball pressure. India on top at this moment. Just a couple of singles in that over.

Axar Patel from the other end. Immediately squares up Milind off the first ball. Sanjay goes for a slog, skies it but the ball falls safely. A misfield at cover region and batters run a single.

Varun Chakaravarthy into the attack. A single off the first ball. Sanjay clips and takes another single off the second. Crucial four overs this from Varun, could make or break the game. Five runs came off that over.

Siraj bowling his third as well. Milind takes a single off the first ball. An inside edge off Sanjay’s bat and he takes a single. Milind opens the face of the bat and guides the ball towards deep third region for four.

Arshdeep. Almost a fourth! A thick outside edge off Milind’s bat and Siraj at short third dives to his left at full stretch but couldn’t grab the ball. Top effort. Four singles off first four deliveries. Four! Milind pulls towards fine leg despite a dive by Rinku in the deep. A better over for USA, nine runs from it.

Siraj. OUT! Mukkamalla departs too. He looked to flick but hits straight into the hands of short midwicket. Mukkamalla goes for 2 off 7 balls.

Sanjay Krishnamurthi is the new man in. Just three singles and a wicket in that over. India on top at the moment.

Arshdeep. OUT! Monank is gone. Wanted to flick but gets a leading edge straight to mid off. He goes for a two-ball duck.

Milind Kumar is the new man in. Gets off the mark with a single. India has begun really well here, picking two and hasn’t conceded much. Just one run from that over.

Mohammed Siraj from the other end. SIX! Gous launches the straight ball way over the sight screen. Huge shot. OUT! Gous hits it straight to cover point fielder. He falls after scoring 6 off 9 balls.

Monank Patel in at three. An appeal for leg-before but it’s going down the leg. Monank gets off strike with a leg bye. Mukkamalla chips past cover point and gets a double.

Ali Khan back. Stops in his stride after experiencing some pain. Shubham replaces him. Four!! Surya steps to the offside and lofts a length ball over fine leg for four. Fifty for Surya! Low full toss, driven straight to short extra cover. Slower ball well outside off, given a wide. Slower short ball, pulled to midwicket for one. Arshdeep jams a ball in the blockhole back to the bowler. Another yorker, another dot.

Injury concern for Shubham as well. Stands with palms on knees after the previous ball. Low full toss, Arshdeep drives to long on but doesn’t take the single.

Harmeet with his last. Axar guides one to short third for one. Surya is beaten on the outside edge. Drives one to deep extra cover for one. WICKET!! Axar looks to get a move on. The attempted lofted shot goes straight to midwicket.

Return of pace with Netravalkar. Four!! Axar cuts the short, wide ball through point for four. Four!! Outside off, Axar guides it past short third for four more. Slower ball, guided through third man again, just two this time. Ali Khan gets his knee stuck in the ground while fielding and required medical attention. Full on off, Axar drives it to long on for one. Four!! Square leg inside the fence, Surya waits for it and uses his wrists to loft it over the fielder for four. Six!! Full on the stumps, lofted over midwicket for six. How long has it been since we’ve seen a six. 21 from the over.

Harmeet to Surya, full on the stumps, clipped to midwicket for one. Axar defends a straight ball to short midwicket. Turns one towards short fine to pick up one. Surya arches back and cuts one past backward point, the fielder running across manages to keep it in. Looks like his feet touched the cushion in the process. Four given. Follows it up with a single to midwicket. Axar goes for the slog, picks a single towards midwicket.

Mohsin to Surya, sweeps a full ball to deep square for a double. Full on legstump, whipped towards midwicket. Surya will pick two more. Four!! Swept again, infront of square this time, finds the boundary. Shorter length, Surya premeditates the sweep and is caught out by the length. Back of a length on off, guided to backward point.

Four!! Harmeet to Hardik, uppish drive but beats the extra cover fielder and runs away to the fence. Cuts one hard but can’t beat short third man. WICKET! Harmeet’s fist pumps say the story. Hardik goes on the backfoot and looks to loft one, finds deep cover.

Axar Patel in at 8. Keeps out his first ball that rises a touch. An inside edge saves him fro an lbw.

Mohsin to Rinku, short outside off, jammed to backward point. Picks a single to deep point. Surya brings out the sweep but directs it straight towards deep square. WICKET!! Rinku looks to break the shackles, holes out to long on.

Hardik the new batter in. Defends the first ball to short cover.

Harmeet with his first. Surya picks a single to short third. Full toss to Rinku, can’t get hold of it. Swipes to long on for one. Surya goes on the backfoot and flicks one to midwicket. A sloppy midfield gives the skipper a boundary. Drives a full ball straight to short cover. Another dot to finish the over.

Shubham Ranjane is the new bowler. A four after a while! Suryakumar lofts the ball over mid off for four! Easy pickings. Another four! This time Suryakumar cuts the ball past short third. Nicely placed that. Almost! Suryakumar chips the ball straight and Shubham misses an opportunity to grab it.

Mohsin continues. Plenty of dot balls. Just one run from that over. Rinku unable to rotate strike, tried to sweep but couldn’t time.

Shadley continues. Suryakumar defends his hat-trick ball. Three dot balls to start the over before Suryakumar works the ball towards long on for a single. Both Rinku and Suryakumar looking to take singles, no attacking shots so far. Three singles in that over.

Rinku Singh is the new man in.

Mohammad Mohsin is the new bowler. A couple singles in the first three balls. A very good over by the leg spinner, just three runs off it.

Shadley to bowl the final over of the PowerPlay. OUT! Kishan hits straight to mid off. He falls after scoring 20 off 16 balls. A really good start for USA this.

Ali Khan is back. Kishan is dropped! He slices the straight to backward point. Ali Khan is dejected; was a good opportunity. Kishan now smacks the ball past the cover point for four. Now Kishan gets one on the pads and he flicks it over midwicket region for a six!

Pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk into the attack now. Keeper is still up to the stumps. Kishan takes a single towards deep cover. Tilak slogs and gets another boundary towards midwicket. A misfield at mid off gets Tilak a double. Tilak smacks the ball straight to the bowler who gets a hand on it but isn’t able to grab it. Tough chance and Tilak gets a single.

Netravalkar. Tilak comes down the track and launches the high and straight for a six! Lovely shot that. The keeper is up at the stumps now. Netravalkar drifts down the leg and Tilak pushes the ball towards fine leg for four. Taps and gives the strike to Kishan now. Kishan gives the strike back to Tilak. Tilak finishes the over with a lofted hit just over mid on for four.

Ali Khan from the other end. Brings the ball in, Kishan taps and takes a single. Abhishek on strike. OUT! Abhishek falls first ball! Wide outside off, he goes for a lofted drive, straight to deep cover.

Tilak Varma in at three. Starts off with a couple of dot balls. Tests Tilak with a bouncer on that occasion, beats him. Single off that last ball. Just two runs and a wicket in that over.

Seaming in and Kishan is beaten. Ishan comes down the track but doesn’t time the ball well, straight to midwicket fielder, another dot. SIX! Almost a slog sweep by Kishan on that occasion and ball goes over deep square leg fielder. An inside edge and Kishan takes a single. Seven from the first over.

Saurabh Netravalkar, the United States of America’s leading wicket-taker, insisted that the geopolitical fissures between India and Pakistan have never seeped into the USA dressing room.

Pacer Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026 after sustaining a knee injury, with Mohammed Siraj named as his replacement, the BCCI announced on Friday.

During India’s lone warm-up match against South Africa at the D.Y. Patil Stadium, Harshit pulled out of his run-up twice in the only over he bowled. After completing the over, he was visibly uncomfortable and returned to the dressing room holding his right knee. He took no further part in the match after the fifth over.

“Following consultations with a specialist and subsequent scans, the BCCI medical team deemed him unfit to participate in the tournament. The team management wishes him a speedy recovery,” the BCCI stated.

“Mohd. Siraj will join the team as Harshit’s replacement in the squad,” the release added.
