Celtic agree terms with Jota as stunning deal all but done – sources

Celtic have agreed terms with Jota over a stunning return to Parkhead from Rennes, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that an £8million deal is now all but done, and advanced talks will continue over the coming days to iron out details.

Brendan Rodgers had targeted the signing of a new left-midfielder as a priority in the January transfer window and was a leading voice behind the deal.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Celtic would look to sign a replacement for Luis Palma if he leaves the club, and his departure is drawing nearer.

The 25-year-old Jota, meanwhile, is said to be keen on a return to Glasgow where he is still held in high esteem by the fans 18 months after his departure.

A then Scottish record sale of £25million secured Celtic an important influx of cash, and his return for around a third of that price is seen as a huge coup.

Celtic set to complete sensational Jota return from Rennes

Jota left Al-Ittihad to join Rennes just six months ago, but has struggled to establish himself in the side, starting just three of his ten appearances for the club.

As a result, the opportunity to return to Celtic is seen as a chance for him to find his feet in club football again in front of a crowd who know all about his talents.

The Portuguese winger made 83 appearances during his time in Glasgow, scored 28 goals, provided 26 assists, and became a favourite under Ange Postecoglou.

During that time, he lifted two Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish League Cups and one Scottish Cup, and will be hoping to add more to his cabinet this season.

Celtic, meanwhile, look set to lose a key attacker in Kyogo Furuhashi, which has paved the way for Jota to return as part of Rodgers’ front three.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 23 January that Kyogo has flown out to France to undergo a medical ahead of his move to Rennes.
