Joe Cole names the Liverpool player he wants to leave this summer - 'There are options for him'

Joe Cole is a big fan of the Liverpool midfielder but believes he needs to be playing more regularly

Joe Cole believes it could be time for Harvey Elliott to leave Liverpool

By the end of this weekend, Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions. A win or a draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon would seal the deal.

It would be the Reds' second title in five years but their first since 1990 in front of supporters given the 2020 success was celebrated behind closed doors because of the Covid pandemic. It has all the makings of being an emotional and memorable occasion.

Every member of the Liverpool squad will be relishing it but perhaps even more so for the players who grew up supporting the club - one of those players being Harvey Elliott.

While born in Surrey, Elliott was brought up as a big Red through his father. He achieved his dream of signing for Liverpool in the summer of 2019 from Fulham when he was just 16.

The attacking midfielder did make two appearances in his debut campaign at Anfield, which culminated in Jurgen Klopp's side winning the Premier League at a canter, but it was in the following years, after a successful loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, that he became a regular in the first team.

However, Elliott has found game time harder to come by this season following the arrival of Arne Slot as Klopp's successor. In fact, he has yet to start a league game under the Dutchman.

That has not stopped the 22-year-old from making significant impacts off the bench, most notably when he scored the winner at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

But there has been speculation over Elliott's future and former Reds midfielder Joe Cole believes he won't be short of offers if he or the club does decide to part ways this summer.

"For players like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, I think they’re both fantastic players and are more than capable of playing for England, but unfortunately for them, Liverpool are very strong in that area of the pitch," Cole said to Paddy Power.

"I’d love to see Harvey playing regularly. There are options for him and if he does become available, I think quite a few teams will be interested in him.

"He’s a fantastic player and I’d like to see him leave Liverpool to play regular football because he’s old enough and has done his time. I’d just love to see him play because he’s such a fantastically talented player."

Elliott, who made 53 appearances during Klopp's final season in charge of the Reds, addressed his lack of minutes after his winner in Paris in March.

He said: "I'm still young, it's a hard thing to understand in my head really. I've played almost 150 games for Liverpool and I feel like I'm very experienced in terms of that aspect.

“So there are moments within the season where I am getting angry, I am getting frustrated because I want to play, but at the same time I need to respect the situation, I need to respect the manager's decisions.

“Some games I'm needed, some games I'm not. That's just how football is. That's why I feel like we're in the position that we are in this season so far because of his decisions.”

Elliott added of talks with Slot: "We've had conversations. Very honest conversations and open conversations. It's down to me to put the work in, to be honest, and show him everything that he's told me.

"I'm trying to work on it, I'm trying to improve and I'm trying to get in this team.

"At the same time, I feel like I can't get too angry and frustrated because quite frankly the team is doing amazing. It's a team game.

"It's just not about me. I just need to make sure that I'm in the right mind frame to come on and influence the game."
