Paraguayan football expert explains Diego Leon style of play, Manchester United wonderkid 'still so raw'

The arrival of Diego Leon at Manchester United is imminent as he gears up for pre-season under Ruben Amorim.

It will have been a long yet exciting six months for Diego Leon as he has awaited his move to Manchester United.

Back in December, United agreed to sign Leon for £3.2m up front, rising to £7m with add-ons. In addition, Leon completed his medical in Manchester in January when he was also pictured with Lisandro Martinez.

The move to Old Trafford is a major deal and Leon described United as his dream. The 18-year-old will make history for United with Leon becoming the first Paraguayan at the club.

It is a signing suits the recruitment plans of Ineos, with Leon among the top prospects in the world at his age. Now, his arrival at United is imminent.

But what can United fans expect from the wing-back?

Leon was spotted at the airport on his way to Manchester this week, making a move across the world to further his career. However he is not moving just to make up the numbers, instead Leon has outlined ambitious goals at United.

However, United in Focus have spoken with Paraguayan football expert Roberto Rojas, and the ESPN journalist has expressed doubt over Leon’s ability to immediately step into the limelight for United.

When asked whether he thought Leon was ready for the Premier League, Rojas admitted his doubts.

“Probably not. But that is where he can develop into it”, he explained.

“He is still so raw”, Rojas then added in relation to Leon’s technical ability.

Rojas also shared information on Leon and his style of play, from which is became evident that the Paraguayan wonderkid is a strong fit for the left wing-back role.

On his debut for Cerro Porteno, Leon scored to demonstrate his attacking threat, which is a big part of what Ruben Amorim wants from his wing-back.

Leon is a left sided wing-back and has qualities both in attack and defence with his raw physical ability allowing him to run relentlessly up and down all game.

Rojas pointed out that Leon’s “speed and versatility” help him stand out. Leon is a goal threat with a strong strike from his left foot and also has a good cross on him.

However, Leon is less polished in his passing and decision making, which see him slightly error prone right now, however at his age this is not an issue with growth and development expected.

Leon is expected to partake in pre-season, where we will learn more about him as a player.
