Five players Luka Modric can tempt to Swansea after buying stake

Luka Modric has joined the Swansea ownership group.

Luka Modric described acquiring a minority stake in Championship club Swansea as an “exciting opportunity”. The 39-year-old Real Madrid superstar is making his first foray into football ownership after being attracted to the south Wales club. The Ballon d’Or winner wanted to join Swansea’s ownership group because of the “ambition to compete at the highest level”, while Modric pledged to provide his own experience in any way possible. Talented players may well be lining up to get the chance to help fulfil Modric’s goal of returning Swansea to the Premier League and Express Sport has taken a look at five players the Croatian legend may recruit…

Ben Davies Ben Davies is out of contract this summer after leaving Swansea for Tottenham just over a decade ago. His path did not directly cross with Modric's, joining Spurs two years after the midfielder left, but the Croatian could help facilitate a homecoming. Neath-born Davies joined Swansea’s academy when he was six and made his senior footballing debut for the club 13 years later. It remains to be seen if Spurs will give the dressing room favourite a contract extension. But if not, Swansea may be on hand to offer Davies an emotional return to help lead their charge back to the top flight with Modric.

Luka Modric could help tempt Ben Davies back to Swansea.

Lewis O’Brien Nottingham Forest loanee Lewis O’Brien has had a hugely positive impact since arriving as Matt Grimes’ replacement. He bagged his first goal in Swansea colours during the recent 3-0 win over Plymouth. WalesOnline claim that the midfielder is open to staying in SA1 should he be presented with that opportunity, having fallen out of favour with his parent club. The finances involved would prove to be the most difficult hurdle to overcome, but one advantage Swansea have over their rivals in a transfer race would be the ability to call upon Modric, a dream mentor for any midfielder.

Reinier Real Madrid forked out £25million for then-Brazilian wonderkid Reinier, willing to pay the release clause in his Flamengo contract, such was the belief they had in his talent. Just over five years later, however, and the attacking midfielder has not played a single minute for Los Blancos’ first team. He has had loans at Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone and most recently Granada. The former bright spark, on the conveyor belt with Vinicius Jr and Endrick, now has a year left on his contract. But Madrid would likely be willing to part ways for a nominal fee, with Swansea a potential landing spot now that the Spanish club have someone they can trust on the inside. It could be the perfect move to get Reinier’s career back on track.

Reinier in action on loan for Frosinone.

Grady Diangana To earn promotion to the Premier League, a club needs the absolute best players in a cut-throat Championship. Grady Diangana has proven that he is a cut above in the second division and joining Swansea would certainly be a statement of intent from Modric and co. He is out of contract with West Brom at the end of the season and there will be interest from those who go up and teams already in the Premier League, but getting Diangana on board would show that the new ownership group mean business.
