Cal Poly Shuts Out Santa Clara on Nephrotic Syndrome Awareness Day

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — On Nephrotic Syndrome Awareness Day, the Cal Poly women's tennis team dominated Santa Clara, securing a 7-0 victory over the Broncos on Saturday at the Ronca Tennis Center.Cal Poly won all six singles matches in straight sets to secure a clean sweep over the Broncos. It was the Mustangs' fifth shutout victory of the season and third 7-0 win. With the triumph, No. 56-ranked Cal Poly improved to an impressive 11-3 on the season, their best start since they posted a 14-3 record during the 2021 season.The Mustangs opened the dual by securing the doubles point thanks to a pair of 6-4 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. First, seniorand redshirt sophomorewon at No. 1 to improve to 7-2 together, then seniorand juniorclinched it at No. 2 to move to 7-3 on the year.Buntrock (No. 1), sophomore(No. 6) and freshman(No. 5) made quick work in their singles matches to lock up the dual victory for the Mustangs. Buntrock, the defending Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win to move to 7-4 on the year. Lynch captured a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory to help her record reach 9-3 on the year and 7-2 at the No. 6 spot. MacCallum clinched the dual with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to grab her 11th win in her last 12 matches and improve to a team-best 11-3 on the season and 9-1 at the No. 5 spot.Juniormoved to 10-3 on the year with a straight sets win at No. 4, and Mosse gave Cal Poly a 6-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 to help her record reach 9-4 on the year. Dunkle capped off the shutout win with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory at No. 2 to improve to 8-2 this season and move into a tie with her older sister,, for fifth on Cal Poly's career dual singles list with 45.Buntrock, Dunkle and Mosse all went a perfect 2-0 in singles and doubles on the day.During the match, Cal Poly raised awareness for nephrotic syndrome and honored their Team IMPACT member, 9-year-old Brooke Fritz, who is currently battling the rare kidney disease.Cal Poly hosts CSUN at noon Sunday for its Big West home opener to continue its four-match homestand.
