Steve Smith has achieved one of cricket's great feats, scoring his 10,000th Test run.

Needing just one run, Smith brought up the milestone on his first delivery, skipping down the wicket and punching a single to mid-on, on the opening day of Australia's first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Steve Smith is captaining Australia in Pat Cummins's absence, with a reshuffled line-up taking on Sri Lanka in the first of two Tests in Galle.

The 35-year-old becomes the fourth Australian to achieve the landmark, and the 15th across all Test nations.

Ricky Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927) are the other Australian batters to have scored 10,000 runs in a Test career.

Smith reached the mark in his 115th Test (second only to Brian Lara), and 205th innings (behind Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ponting).

Smith made his Test debut at Lord's against Pakistan in 2010, where he scored 1 and 12 while batting in the lower order.

Fancied as a leg spin bowler at the start of his career, he took three wickets in the fourth innings to help Australia secure a 150-run win.

His first Test century came in the fifth Test of the 2013 Ashes series in England, scoring 138 not out in the first innings at the Oval.

Four months later he scored his first Test century in Australia, again against England, with 111 in the first innings at the WACA Ground.

Smith has 34 Test centuries and an average of 55.9 heading into the Sri Lankan Test series.

Ponting holds the Australian record for Test centuries with 41 from his 168 Tests.

Smith was on 9,999 career Test runs when he was dismissed in the final innings of the Border-Gavaskar Series against India.

That day, Smith needed just five runs to bring up the milestone in front of his home crowd at the SCG.
