RD2 Injury Update: Bolton, Switkowski, Walters

Shai Bolton faces a test to play his first game for Fremantle against Sydney on Sunday, according to High Performance Manager Phil Merriman.

Bolton (leg) didn’t feature in Fremantle’s season-opener against Geelong, but is a chance to be named in Round 2.

“Shai is going to be up for a test at main training, we’re just settling down a fibula so if he gets through training, he will be available for selection,” Merriman said.

Pressure forward Sam Switkowski is expected to be sidelined for the next two-to-three weeks after exiting Saturday’s loss to Geelong in the third quarter with an adductor concern.

Young forward Cooper Simpson also faces a test to return to football after injuring his left ankle while playing a WAFL practice match with Peel Thunder last Saturday.

“Cooper rolled his ankle this week so he is just settling down that ankle, taking down that swelling and hopefully he will be available as well.”

Michael Walters will spend longer on the sidelines than expected after receiving a knock to his knee in the AAMI Community Series game against Melbourne.

“He has a little bit of bone bruising there,” Merriman said.

“We are going to de-load him for a week or two and then build him back up.”

Hayden Young (hamstring) and Sean Darcy (knee/ankle) are both progressing as planned with their rehabilitation.

“They are now entering the main football program,” Merriman said.

“We need to build up their loads in that sense and we hope to see them back on the field in the next two weeks.”

Meanwhile, fellow forward Sam Sturt is recovering from a knee injury.

“Sam picked up a little adductor injury that will unfortunately leave him out for the next two to three weeks,” Merriman said.

“Sturty has got a long-standing knee issue that has flared up. He will be working to get back into the footy program in the next couple of weeks.”
