The Australian cricket team will begin its T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a Group B fixture against Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 11.

To be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the T20 World Cup 2026 matches will be spread across venues in Colombo, Kandy and five Indian cities. The tournament will run from February 7 to March 8 and will feature 20 teams.

Australia have been placed in Group B alongside co-hosts Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Oman. All teams in the group will play each other once in a single round-robin format.

Following the group stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round, while the remaining sides will be eliminated. The eight qualified teams will then be split into two groups of four in the Super 8 stage.

No points or results from the group stage will be carried forward. Each team will face the other three teams in their Super 8 group once, with the top two progressing to the semi-finals.

The semi-final winners will meet in the final to contest the T20 World Cup 2026 title on March 8 and 9 (as per AEDT).

The 2026 edition marks the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup, which was first held in 2007. Australia won their maiden title in 2021 and finished runners-up in 2010.

In the most recent edition in 2024, Australia were knocked out in the Super 8 stage after defeats against Afghanistan and eventual champions India.

Australia head into the tournament with a depleted pace attack. Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins have been ruled out due to injuries, while Mitchell Starc has retired from international cricket.

With none of the established fast-bowling trio available, captain Mitchell Marsh and Nathan Ellis will form the core of the pace attack, supported by Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis.

The responsibility is expected to shift towards the spin department, led by Adam Zampa, particularly on potentially turning wickets in the sub-continent.

Australia will enter the upcoming World Cup on the back of an underwhelming 3-0 loss to Pakistan in a bilateral T20 series away from home. Their warm-up game against the Netherlands was also washed out.
