Bengaluru is known for its love for cricket and is synonymous with some of the historic moments in Indian cricket and the city is set to get a new stadium.Following the tragic stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved a Rs 1,650 crore mega sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, featuring a cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 80,000. Once completed, it will be India’s second-largest cricket stadium, trailing only the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The victory celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 triumph turned fatal on June 4 when a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives. The venue has a seating capacity of 32,000 but is spread over only 17 acres. It was deemed unfit for major events by the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission. The report further recommended shifting high-profile matches to larger, better-equipped venues with ample parking and crowd management facilities. After the incident, the Maharaja Trophy 2025 was moved to Mysuru after police denied clearance. There is also a doubt over Bengaluru hosting five Women’s World Cup matches later this year, as well as 2026 IPL fixtures. The Karnataka government approved Karnataka Housing Board’s (KHB) ambitious plan for a 100-acre sports hub in Bengaluru’s southern outskirts. It will be funded entirely by the KHB.The sports complex will be more than just cricket — it will feature eight indoor and eight outdoor sports arenas, state-of-the-art gyms and training facilities, Olympic-sized swimming pools, guest houses, hostels, and hotels and a convention hall for international eventsBengaluru has been a cricketing powerhouse, producing legends like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javgal Srinath and KL Rahul. It’s also been home to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) Centre of Excellence, the centre for Indian cricket’s future. The new stadium could ensure the city remains a prime venue for international cricket, IPL matches, and marquee events, especially when existing facilities face logistical and safety concerns.
