NEW DELHI: The India–Pakistan cricket rivalry is widely regarded as one of the most intense in world sport, with every encounter drawing massive global viewership. While India have enjoyed near-total dominance over Pakistan in ICC World Cups — winning 15 out of 16 matches, including an 8-0 clean sweep in ODI World Cups and a 7-1 record in T20 World Cups — their Asia Cup record is similarly tilted in their favour too.Since the continental tournament’s inception in 1984, both nations have featured in 15 of the 16 editions, clashing 18 times across ODI and T20 formats.India lead the Asia Cup head-to-head 10–6, with two matches ending as no result. The title tally also favours India, who have lifted the trophy eight times compared to Pakistan’s two.The rivalry has produced memorable contests. From India’s inaugural 54-run win in 1984 to the record 228-run thrashing in 2023, each meeting has carried high stakes. Pakistan’s biggest Asia Cup win came in 1995 by 97 runs, while their most recent triumph was a five-wicket T20I win in 2022.(*T20I matches)The only edition India skipped was in 1986, when political and security concerns over Sri Lanka’s civil war led the Indian government to pull the team out.Pakistan, meanwhile, missed the 1990–91 tournament due to strained diplomatic relations with India. This year’s Asia Cup, to be held in the UAE from September 9–28, will follow the T20I format and feature eight teams. India are drawn in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong make up Group B. Though India are the designated hosts, Indo-Pak fixtures will continue to be staged at neutral venues under an arrangement between the BCCI and PCB.With India’s ICC record casting a long shadow — and a 10–6 Asia Cup edge already established — the September clash will be more than just a group-stage match: it will be another chapter in cricket’s most-watched rivalry.
