Michael Carrick is emerging as a strong contender for the Manchester United job on a full-time basis.

With four wins from four games, Manchester United have been revived by Michael Carrick and his new coaching team.

United’s board do not have to make a decision on his future right now, there are still 13 Premier League fixtures remaining.

The club will make a decision as the end of the season approaches, and despite the groundswell of support from Manchester United fans in favour of Carrick, there are no guarantees.

Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt is warning Manchester United against rushing into a decision over Carrick.

Butt points to previous errors from United, with the club churning through managers over the past decade.

He told The Good, The Bad & The Football: “History tells you they jump into emotional decisions as a club, which they do.

“It’s not any slant on Michael, it’s not any slant on what he’s doing, it’s looking at the bigger picture.

“The manager choice has been not good over the last 10 years, and now people who are fans and who have got a massive love for the football club, don’t want another mistake.”

Butt did admit that if Manchester United continue this winning streak under Carrick, it will become impossible for Ineos to turn any other way.

He said: “If Michael keeps doing what he’s doing now and gets to eight games, nine games, I think the choice is taken out the board’s hands.

“He’s got to have it.”

Carrick is looking to make it five wins in a row when United travel to West Ham. A fixture away at Everton follows.

Paul Scholes says Michael Carrick winning games could become a bad thing for Manchester United

What if United don’t appoint Michael Carrick?

There are numerous examples of ‘low experience’ managers who have had success at top clubs, showing the way for Michael Carrick to succeed.

But in recent years United have not tried ‘big names’, and the club is torn between appointing Carrick, and chasing a bigger, more established boss.

Paul Scholes has called for United to go after England boss Thomas Tuchel, but he concedes that Carrick’s strong record now actually creates a tough job for his potential successor.

Scholes explained: “The way it’s looking, he is going to get Champions League football.

“And if they don’t give it him, and you bring in Tuchel and it gets to October or November and it’s not going great, people are going to asking for him again.”
