The striker scored 23 league goals for Eddie Howe’s side last term and has been the subject of interest from the reigning Premier League champions.Liverpool tabled an offer worth up to £120million for Isak but the bid was swiftly rejected by Newcastle. Isak is reported to be refusing to play for the club again, but the Magpies maintain that the forward is not for sale.Premier League newcomer Ekitike arrived as part of Liverpool’s transfer spree this summer, sealing a £79m move from Eintracht Frankfurt. The 23-year-old reportedly penned a six-year deal worth £250,000-per-week, earning an eye-watering £13m annually, after beating Newcastle in the race for Ekitike’s signature.Ekitike’s wages at Liverpool will particularly sting for Isak. The Swedish striker earns £120,000 per week at Newcastle after agreeing a six-year deal in August 2022, just under half of what Ekitike is being paid despite his lack of experience in English football. It has been claimed that the Isak transfer saga was kick-started by former sporting director Paul Mitchell not offering him the new deal that Amanda Staveley had promised before she left the club. Isak was reportedly seeking £300,000 per week from Newcastle, which would be above the club’s current wage structure.Newcastle were said to be willing to go up to £200,000-a-week, surpassing the club’s highest earner Bruno Guimaraes on £160,000-a-week. Isak joined as the club’s record signing in 2022 and helped end the club’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy last season by scoring in the Carabao Cup final.Article continues belowWages are not thought to have been a major factor in Ekitike's decision to join Liverpool over Newcastle. However, the gulf in the pair’s salaries partly explains why Isak may feel he deserves a pay rise.Hugo Ekitike scored for Liverpool in the Community Shield last weekend (Image: Rob Newell - CameraSport via Getty Images)Ekitike may be earning more than double Isak’s current wage but he is not Liverpool’s top earner. Mohamed Salah earns around £400,000-per-week after recently renewing his deal and club captain Virgil van Dijk receives slightly less than the club’s star forward. In terms of Isak’s situation, the striker is training away from Newcastle’s first team and is not expected to be involved in the team’s season opener at Aston Villa on Saturday, However, Newcastle boss Howe has not ruled out welcoming Isak back into his squad in the future.“He is still our player," Howe said earlier this summer. "He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control."Newcastle were already working on signing Brentford forward Yoane Wissa before Isak expressed his desire to leave the club. The Magpies are short of recognised strikers, with William Osula being the only other centre-forward in the squad after Callum Wilson ’s departure.Alexander Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 games for Newcastle (Image: Serena Taylor/Newcastle United via Getty Images)Meanwhile, Ekitike is not the only new arrival to the Premier League to be earning more than Isak. Benjamin Sesko reportedly turned down a more lucrative offer from Newcastle to join Manchester United, where he penned a five-year deal worth £160,000-per-week.Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres is also raking in more money than his fellow countryman after joining the Gunners from Sporting Lisbon. The former Brighton and Coventry City forward is being paid £200,000-per-week as he prepares to lead the line for Mikel Arteta ’s side.Article continues belowJoin our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
