'Rapid' £33m defender who has agreed Liverpool move says he almost signed for them as a kid

Arne Slot’s arrival has meant Liverpool have improved in several different departments.

One of them is defensively, with Liverpool conceding the joint-least goals alongside Arsenal (21) in the Premier League this season.

Virgil van Dijk has been in incredible form, leading the Reds’ backline while the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also stood out this campaign.

But the concern for Liverpool is that in the summer, Alexander-Arnold could join Real Madrid, who is a key part of their back four from both a defensive and an offensive standpoint.

Jeremie Frimpong reveals he nearly signed for Liverpool as a kid

Liverpool have scouted Jeremie Frimpong as the potential heir to the Englishman.

A report even emerged last month that Frimpong had agreed a move to Liverpool at the end of the season.

In an interview with Rising Ballers, Jeremie Frimpong stated that he nearly signed for Liverpool before making the move to Manchester City’s academy as a nine-year-old.

“There were scouts there [at a grassroots tournament] like Liverpool, Bolton, Man City and a lot more. But I choose Liverpool first. I was going to sign for them but back then, driving wasn’t a thing, my family wasn’t driving like that and it was far.”

“And obviously, Man City was local and I tried Man City next and then it made more sense. it was 15 minutes on the bus, so yeah.”

If the Dutchman had signed for Liverpool as a youngster, they would have had both him and Alexander-Arnold as homegrown talents to battle for the right-back spot; a luxury most clubs do not have.

Frimpong is likelier to join Liverpool than Bayern Munich in the summer as well.

Bayer Leverkusen value Frimpong at £33.6 million, who has been a phenomenon for the German side since joining them in 2021.

What Virgil van Dijk has said about Jeremie Frimpong

If the 24-year-old did indeed head to Anfield in the summer, he would bump into familiar faces in Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Van Dijk described Frimpong as “rapid” as he used just one word to sum his countryman up.

Kyle Walker lauded Frimpong when he was told that the former City defender scored goals in double digits last season.

Sources told TBR Football that Manchester City have done background checks on Frimpong as they assess the idea of re-signing him.

Here is a statistical comparison of the Bundesliga winner alongside Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson this season.

Frimpong has been more productive than both of Liverpool’s starting full-backs and perhaps under Arne Slot, he could prove to be one hell of a signing if a deal is indeed agreed.
