The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) unanimously passed a resolution to rename Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in West Mambalam after the acclaimed Chennai-based cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin on Friday (March 21, 2025).The proposal was made at the GCC council meeting for Budget 2025 presided over by Mayor R. Priya at the Ripon Buildings.The decision to rename the street was based on a request received from Carrom Ball Event & Marketing Pvt. Ltd., whose Chief Operating Officer, S. Karthik highlighted Mr. Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket.Besides Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street, Aryagowda Road in West Mambalam was also considered for renaming.“Mr. Ashwin has represented India and Tamil Nadu in numerous matches, winning several awards and accolades. He is widely recognised as one of the world’s best all-rounders,” the Greater Chennai Corporation resolution read.The GCC had sought and received government approval to pass a resolution for the renaming of the street.The proposal was earlier presented to the Standing Committee (Taxation and Finance), which recommended it for approval at the council meeting.The 38-year-old India’s ace spinner announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18 in 2024 after the end of the third Test match against Australia in Brisbane, finishing as India’s second highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 scalps in 106 games.On January 25 this year, the Union government announced that Mr. Ashwin would be conferred with Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu.The cricketer is to play for the Chennai Super Kings team in the upcoming 18th season of Indian Premier League that begins on March 22.
