Wayne Rooney has one wish after watching Marcus Rashford's display vs PSG in Champions League quarter-final

Marcus Rashford’s Champions League journey for Aston Villa ended on Tuesday night as PSG survived to knock out the Premier League side.

However, they didn’t go down without a fight at Villa Park. They fought back from 2-0 down on the night and 5-1 on aggregate to lead 3-2 at home before ultimately succumbing to a 5-4 aggregate loss.

Aston Villa were ultimately outclassed by a brilliant PSG team, but on Tuesday night, Marcus Rashford was the star of the show as he showcased his quality.

Most impressively, Rashford left Manchester United supporters in awe with his assist. It was a thing of beauty from the United loanee as he beat two opposition defenders before pulling the ball back for a wonderful assist.

His performance was so good that it also had club legend Wayne Rooney raving.

Wayne Rooney hopes to see Marcus Rashford make Manchester United return

It is no secret that Rooney is a big fan of United star Rashford, but despite this, he still urged the 27-year-old to ditch Old Trafford temporarily in January. The move worked out well for Rashford, and now, Rooney has a different message.

Speaking on Amazon Prime Video Sport after the game, Rooney was talking about the need for Villa to secure Champions League football in order to keep players like Rashford, but he admitted he would rather they don’t.

“A big thing for them [Villa] now is definitely to finish in the Champions League because you see [Marco] Asensio and Rashford, for them to keep them players, and I hope they don’t.

“I hope Rashford goes back to Manchester United and performs like he did tonight; that’s what we all want to see as Manchester United fans.”

The debate over whether or not Rashford should return to United is a hot topic right now, with arguments on both sides of the aisle making complete sense. However, ultimately, it will be down to the player, which Ruben Amorim consistently explained.

When United sent Rashford out on loan, it was a decision few disagreed with as he clearly needed a break from the pressure and abuse he often received, and since heading to Villa, he has played football with a smile on his face once again.

However, with Villa yet to decide whether to sign him, now Crystal Palace have been linked with signing Rashford permanently, which is absolutely not the kind of club he would have wanted to join.

Due to this and the fact he loves United, there could be a chance he is eager to make it work at the club he has been at his whole career, particularly if he can prove to Amorim that he will put in the work as he has shown he can do with Villa.

With the state of United’s attack right now, few would turn their noses up at Rashford reinforcing the ranks, but there would absolutely be hesitation to welcome him back. The ball is in his court, but Rooney has made his opinion clear.
