Germany attacker Thomas Muller confirmed on Saturday that he is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

Muller, who holds the all-time Bayern appearance record with 743 matches, will bring an end to his 25-year association with the German giant, having joined the academy in 2000.

In a statement on X, Muller said, “The club has consciously decided not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season.

“Even if this did not correspond to my personal wishes, it is important that the club follows its convictions. I respect this step, which the board and supervisory board certainly did not take lightly.”

Muller will finish the season with the revamped FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, starting June 14.

He did not make any reference to the next step of his club career.

Mueller, for years a guaranteed starter, had seen his playing time drop sharply in the last two seasons and now only plays a minor role under coach Vincent Kompany.

His future has been the subject of intense speculation for several months but until now, both the club and the player have stayed silent. While there is no indication that Mueller will retire from football any time soon, Bayern has hinted it would like him to get involved with the club following the end of his playing days.

The 35-year-old made his Bayern senior debut in 2008 and has won 12 Bundesliga championship, including 11 in a row.

He also has two Champions League and six DFB-Pokal titles during his 17 seasons at Bayern.

Muller is third on the all-time goal-scorer list for Bayern with 247 goals behind Gerd Muller (565) and Robert Lewandowski (344).
