Dunkle Makes History as Cal Poly Secures 6-1 Win Over UCI on Senior Day

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In their final home match, seniorbroke the Division I school record for career singles victories and seniorearned the clinching point to propel the Mustang women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over UC Irvine on Sunday at the Ronca Tennis Center.The commanding win allowed No. 52 Cal Poly to finish off its 2025 home schedule with a 12-1 record. The victory was also the Mustangs' ninth straight and 15th in 16 matches, allowing them to improve to an incredible 18-3 on the season, the second most wins in the program's Division I history.With the triumph, Cal Poly moved to 7-1 in Big West play and locked up a top two seed and a double bye to the semifinals in the 10-team conference tournament on April 24-27 in San Diego, meaning they will only have to win two matches at the postseason tourney to claim their second consecutive Big West Championship and secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Following Sunday's victory over the Anteaters (10-10, 1-6 Big West), Cal Poly honored its three graduating seniors —andThe Mustangs opened the dual by securing the doubles point. First, Mosse and juniorrolled to a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot to move to 12-4 together this season. Then for the second straight match, sophomoreand freshmanclinched the doubles point for the Mustangs, claiming their sixth straight victory with a 6-4 triumph at No. 3 to improve to 7-1 as a tandem.Cal Poly dismantled UCI in singles play, winning five matches in straight sets. Buntrock got the dominant display by the Mustangs started with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot.MacCallum continued her sensational season in singles play, winning 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot to grab her eighth straight victory and improve to 17-3 on the year, tied for the seventh most singles wins in a season in Division I program history. MacCallum has now won 17 out of her last 18 matches that have finished.With a dual victory in sight, Mosse stepped up in her final home match and clinched it for the Mustangs with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 to improve to 14-6 this season, 7-1 in Big West play and 31-11 in her career.Just seconds after Mosse's clincher, Dunkle made history on court No. 2, winning 6-2, 6-2 to surpass Carol Erickson for the most career singles victories in Division I program history with her 52nd. The win was her ninth straight this season and allowed her to move to 15-2 this season, 6-1 in conference play and 52-20 in her career.Lynch gave Cal Poly a resounding 6-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6 to improve to 15-4 this year and 7-1 in Big West play.Juniorwon the second set in her match at No. 4, but fell 10-3 in a super tiebreaker to end the dual.Sunday's victory sets up a showdown at Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara (13-8, 8-0 Big West) this coming Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner will earn the No. 1 seed in the Big West tournament. No. 42 UCSB clinched at least a share of the Big West regular season title with a 6-1 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.
