Paul Pogba suffers another setback as Monaco’s Champions League call raises questions

Paul Pogba’s spell at Monaco is not going as planned, as the French midfielder has been dealt another setback.

Although Paul Pogba left Manchester United under a grey cloud in June 2022, following the expiration of his contract, the Frenchman has learned that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

The 2018 World Cup winner joined Juventus as a free agent, returning to Turin after six years at Old Trafford. What was meant to be a fairytale reunion spiralled into a nightmare of injuries and a career-changing doping ban.

An initial four-year ban was overturned and reduced to 18 months for doping charges, opening the door for Pogba to return to football in June 2025 by signing for Monaco.

The former United academy graduate has played just 30 minutes for Monaco this season due to fitness issues and injury setbacks.

Pogba’s difficult season with Monaco has continued for more than two and a half months since he suffered issues with the left calf muscles.

Monaco are not yet able to say when Pogba will return to action. It pretty much means the risk they took by signing the former United and Juventus midfielder has backfired.

Pogba has been left out of Monaco’s Champions League squad, according to RMC Sports. That means the 32-year-old will have no involvement in the latter rounds.

Monaco will take on fellow Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League play-offs, but they will be without Pogba – not that he has been much help to them this season.

Monaco director Thiago Scuro said: “Medical staff is focused on finding solutions, first so that he returns to the field before the matches. Paul continues to recover from his calf injury.”

Although Monaco have qualified for the Champions League play-off round, they have been inconsistent domestically.
