UEFA Women’s EURO 2025: Magda Eriksson and Pernille Harder

It is a simple phrase – but to Pernille Harder, it meant the world.

The sentence came from her very traditional grandfather when the Danish football captain came out to him, a response that exceeded expectations.

“That meant so much to me,” she told Vogue Scandinavia.

“He was from a time when things like this weren’t accepted, especially in his small Danish countryside town.

“It touched me that he was open about it, and he was just happy that I was happy.”

Such a treasured moment came when he learned the nature of Harder's relationship with Swedish defender and club teammate Magda Eriksson.

The pair have a love story that spans a decade, and it all comes to a head when they face each other on one of football’s biggest stages on Friday (4 July) at EURO 2025.

Denmark and Sweden will face off in Group D, with the wives-to-be set to be integral to how each side lines up for the important match in the women's European Championships.

“Normally, we both want the best for each other, but for this match, we don’t necessarily,” Harder said.

“We do want to support each other, but when we’re competing, it’s different,” Eriksson adds.

“The last time we played, we had some fights on the pitch that went viral, yet afterwards, we know it’s behind us. Whatever happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch.”
