Amanda Anisimova required three sets to get past Ajla Tomljanovic in her opening match in Miami. Tomljanovic has been competitive so far this season, and she broke Anisimova as she was serving for the match in the second, reeling off three games in a row to take the encounter into a deciding set. A dramatic final set saw the Australian retrieve two breaks after Anisimova had stormed into a 4-0 lead, but the American would prevail as she broke again with Tomljanovic serving to stay in the match. She won 6-1 5-7 6-4 after two hours and 12 minutes.

She now faces Yuliia Starodubtseva in the next round. The Ukrainian made it through as her opponent Cristina Bucsa was forced to retire from the match. Starodubtseva was leading 6-2 3-2 at the time.

Anisimova leads the head-to-head 1-0 after thrashing Starodubtseva 6-1 6-2 in the first-round of the French Open last year. The American isn’t quite at her best right now, but her flat and aggressive hitting should still be too much for her opponent to handle.
