The MCG crowd went silent in tribute to Ferntree Gully teenager Ben Austin who tragically died after an accident while training in the cricket nets on Tuesday.

Players from both sides, umpires and representatives from Ferntree Gully, Mulgrave and Eildon Park cricket clubs all stood on the MCG to honour the teenage cricketer.

It’s a tragedy that resonates around the cricket world as players from all over can put themselves in the place of his parents and loved ones.

The silence was peerless. Fitting for the young man.

Both teams are wearing black armbands in his honour.

It was only a matter of time for Gil who has looked far from his best tonight.

He tried to hit out against Hazlewood and all he did was loft the ball to Mitch Marsh who took an easy catch.

Sanju Samson is now in for India.

India are 1-20 in the third over.

Sharma is such an explosive batter.

He cracked a boundary and then lofted a shot deep towards extra cover and it sailed over for six.

Xavier Bartlett was very tight early but Sharma took to him to end the over.

India are 0-19 halfway through the third over.

Now Gil has been hit in the front of the helmet.

It almost hit the Indian badge, it was so straight.

Gil has removed his helmet and is being quickly assessed by the media team.

He’s had a rough start missing the first and second balls and then being hit by a short ball.

Gil has a new helmet and he looks to be playing on.

India are 0-0 from 0.3 overs.

The devastated father of young cricketer Ben Austin says he would do anything to hear his son’s voice again.

The Austins visited the nets where the 17-year-old’s life was cut short after he was hit in the neck by an accidental full toss while training with a friend on Tuesday night.

“I thought I would never get back to there, but Benny would have wanted that,” Jace Austin said.

“Just wanted to get back to where he last stood and then the sun come through the clouds, and it was beautiful, just what we needed.”

Wearing his son’s cap and returning to the Ferntree Gully oval with his bat, Jace Austin said he wanted his boy to be remembered for his passion and love for sport.

“To hear his voice again, I’d do anything, I’d give up anything. Swap places with him, just to hear his voice again.”
