The first major international artistic gymnastics competition of the new four-year cycle takes place from 26-31 May, and with it, introduces a new event set to make its Olympic debut at LA28.

The Mixed Team Final will feature at the European Championships in Leipzig, Germany, announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 9 April 2025 as one of a number of mixed gender events to be introduced at the Olympic Games LA 2028.

"The mixed events are a real true embodiment of gender equality − men and women competing in the same team, on the same field of play for their country," IOC sports director Kit McConnell said in a news conference of the announcement that alongside artistic gymnastics, golf, rowing (coastal beach sprint), table tennis, archery, and a 4x100m mixed relay in athletics will also follow suit.

"We've seen the real success of these (mixed-gender events). They bring something incredibly special for the athletes involved."

In artistic gymnastics specifically, the event will be in addition to the standard fare of men's and women's separate team finals, individual all-around finals, and apparatus finals that fans are used to, but how might a mixed team event work?
