Manchester United’s out of contract defender Jonny Evans will make an instant return to Old Trafford this summer, despite his playing contract with the club expiring at the start of next month.

The 37-year-old returned to the club where he started his career two years ago, following the expiry of his contract with Leicester City. Earlier this month it was confirmed that Evans’ contract at United wouldn’t be renewed this summer, with the defender expected to leave the club.

There had been reports that he was set to retire, but that is yet to be confirmed. It now however seems that is the case, with Evans staying at United, but this time as a member of staff.

BBC Sport reports that the former Northern Ireland international is set to retire before taking up a role as loans manager with United. The new job will see him look after players out on loan during the 2025/26 season. He replaces Les Parry who left the club back in November.

The Athletic say that United see Evans as a valuable asset to the club due to his character, professionalism and experience of winning. His role will also involve bridging the pathway between playing academy and senior football, something that he has experienced himself, coming through the youth teams at United.

During his two spells at Old Trafford, Evans played 241 times, scoring eight goals. With the club as a player, he was part of a squad that won three Premier League titles, two League Cups, one FA Cup and one Champions League. He also won the FA Cup with Leicester in 2021.
