Ruben Amorim 'Expected to Replace Jose Mourinho at Benfica'

Ruben Amorim is expected to take charge at a huge European club following his exit from Manchester United.

The Portuguese manager's tumultuous stint as Manchester United manager came to an end in January. He launched an incredible rant following the Red Devils' match against Leeds United, where he appeared to take aim at the club's board. He was relieved of his duties just a day later.

The 41-year-old left the Premier League club with a dismal record, having won just 24 of his 63 matches in charge. However, despite his stint at United being so disastrous, he is being tipped to make a swift return to the dugout.

Ruben Amorim Linked With Top European Club

ESPN have reported that there is a real chance that Amorim takes charge at Benfica this summer, a club he represented during his playing days.

Jose Mourinho is the current manager of The Eagles having signed a two-year deal in September 2025. There are doubts whether he will see out the length of his contract, though.

It is expected that 'The Special One' will be offered the Portugal manager role when Roberto Martinez's contract expires after this summer's World Cup.

Amorim, despite his awful spell at United, is still viewed in high regard in Portugal following his successful tenure as Sporting CP boss and is said to have 'significant support' among Benfica's decision makers.

The 41-year-old spent nine years at Benfica as a player between 2008-2017. Amorim, a centre midfielder, represented the club on 154 occasions, scoring six goals and recording 14 assists. He also helped them to 10 trophies, including three Primeira Liga titles.

Ruben Amorim Slammed by Nicky Butt For Not Getting Best Out of Man Utd Trio

Man Utd have improved massively since Amorim departed, with Michael Carrick enjoying a highly successful start to his stint as interim manager.

A big reason for their success under Carrick has been their improvement in midfield. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have both been playing some incredible football in recent weeks, while Kobbie Mainoo has also impressed since becoming a regular once again.

Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes have now taken aim at Amorim for not getting the best out of the trio. On the latest episode of The Good, The Bad & The Football, Butt said:

“All three of them are flying, they obviously like playing together. Casemiro’s on fire, at his age. He’s been unbelievable the last three or four weeks. He’s got Kobbie next to him and Bruno in front of them.

“I don’t understand how someone can get that so wrong. He was never right for the club in the first place.”

Scholes added: “He (Mainoo) is so clever. Him and Bruno Fernandes make your team play football. If Ruben Amorim was still here there is a very good chance he would not be a United player, he would have gone in January.”
